I bought FFXIII on release day, and I am currently about seven hours into it. I'm enjoying it so far. It's several million times better than FFXII, and I find myself actually enjoying fights, which is a nice change

I'm about at the same place, timewise right now (I ended up picking it up). My opinion seems to have more or less aligned with yours, though I cringe at much of the dialogue and pacing. I want to smack Hope backside the head, while Vanille reminds me a bit too much of a younger, much less interesting Rikku. The dialogue is bland and unfulfilling; especially when I compare it to the later Persona games.
I'm really missing the wandering; I was afraid that would happen with FF 10, but never really hit me. Here, the linearity is much more noticeable, due to the lack of any home bases or breathing space, so to speak.
I really can't wait to play an RPG with older protagonists again.
Yeah, looking back, I'm going to have to amend my statement on liking most of the characters. I like Sazh, because he isn't flying off the handle every five minutes, and I really want to like Lightning. I like the decisions that she makes, but I don't understand really why she makes them. The rest of the characters are Hope and Vanille, who I've already commented on, and Snow, who I had mostly forgotten about, and who is kind of annoying.
The Ranking you get determines how much of your TP you get back at the end of battle(if it's still called that in the English version). So as you come to use more Libra and Espers you'll want to get higher Rankings. But it's nice to be able to ignore it when you don't need it, though it's pretty difficult to actually do. Gotta have them stars

I just bought it today. I think the battle system is great, focusing on tactics is a good move. I also think the levelling system is the best in any Final Fantasy (maybe). It's like a job system where each job has a sphere grid, and gaining a job level unlocks another chunk that particular grid. That's perfect.
