I woke up loved today...

I woke up today to Dave kissing my face gently, as he made his way to an early appointment. When we were still in NH, and he was working, that was how I remembered every morning. He would lean over me, kissing me gently on the face or forehead. In a voice just loud enough to be heard, he professes his love, wishing me a good day and promising to ( Read more... )

Yes, back around the early summer of 1996, I was thrown from a canoe (which was subsequently folded around a large rock like thin aluminum foil) in class 5 rapids. We were in the west branch of the Machias River in eastern Maine. I was carried underwater for about 50-60 feet downriver, much like a pinball rolling through a machine. Since then I've have progressive lower back problems. Though several surgical resolutions were attempted, I still have issues walking and standing for long periods (which means lying down works really well for me - hint, hint). As a result, I'm now retired.

C'est ca! (in a nutshell)

There are outfitters that do rafting runs on those kind of rapids, but we would do this one quite routinely. Dave grew up in the deep woods of Maine, and was practically paddling on the river before he could walk. I was lucky though, an inexperienced group had a canoer die the previous year in the same water.

We did all the right things... large group, well outfitted, well trained, etc. Sometimes accidents just happen.
