Chapter 5
“You’re pregnant…”

“Um, yeah,” Aimee said looking down.

Tegoshi looked at her a little confused. Had she married? She had never told him she was married or planning to. No ring on her hand. Then, he opened his eyes wide.

“How far along are you?”

“Um, f-four months and a half…”

“Four… Is it… I mean, we…” All the color had left Tegoshi’s face.

“Maybe you should sit down,” a voice said, he thought it was Koyama’s but he wasn’t sure and didn’t care.

He did sit down, though. He looked up and saw Shige. “It could be someone else’s. I mean she could have been with other guys?” He didn’t really believe that, but his brain was processing things and he wasn’t even aware he was talking at loud.

He looked around and saw the small crowd that was his friends looking at him. Maybe he was being a little melodramatic… no he wasn’t, he might be a father! Or maybe not, maybe she really had been with another guy around the same time. He wasn’t sure which thought was worse.

Ok, ok, calm down, he told himself, maybe you should ask her.

He looked around looking for her. Koyama, Shige, Lara, Massu, Sakurako, Ryo. Where was she?

“Where is she?” he asked. His friends turned around to see the girl was gone. “Where did she go?”

“I think she ran away,” Sakurako said.

“Why?”

“Well,” Ryo started, “you did not react all that well to her condition and you did kind of implied that she sleeps around and could have been knocked up by any number of men including yourself.” Now they were staring at Ryo. “What? He did.”

“Hey, would you have reacted any better if it had been you?” Tegoshi defended himself.

“We are not talking about me, we are talking about you. And I’m always careful.”

“I was careful too! And I didn’t imply she slept around… did I?” Everybody nodded.

He groaned and covered his face. “I have to find her… I mean maybe it’s not… but maybe it is and… what if it is? I mean… no…”

“Tegoshi, you are not making any sense.” Shige cut him off. “Did anybody see which way she went?” Everybody shook their heads. “Right, then let’s split up and see if we can find her, and we’ll meet at Kei’s apartment in half an hour if we don’t. Sounds good?”

Everybody nodded except Koyama. “Why my place?” But everybody ignored him and went looking for the girl.

They were back at Koyama’s apartment. Tegoshi was looking out the window listening to the others talk.

“So, what was that all about?” Sakurako asked. She was apparently part of their circle now, like Lara. Tegoshi remained silent.

“Well, I’m not sure but about 5 months, or I guess it was 4 months and a half, he went on vacation to Okinawa and he stayed there for two weeks. He went alone because his girlfriend had a family thing. When he came back he was all happy and he broke up with his girlfriend but he wouldn’t tell us why. I guess we know now. A few weeks after breaking up with the woman he returned to Okinawa and came back, but this time in a really bad mood.” Koyama explained.

“Did she reject him?” Lara asked.

“He never told us, so I don’t know.”

“She didn’t reject me, she just wasn’t there.”

It was the beginning of summer. Tegoshi had just arrived and he had a week before he had to go back to Tokyo so he was going to enjoy a week in the Okinawa beach. He was staying in a nice hotel near the airport.

He went through the door and saw two receptionists. One was Japanese, she looked in her early forties; the other one was in her early twenties and was definitely not Japanese. She was beautiful. She had long chestnut hair that curled at the tips and her light gold skin made her hazel eyes stand out. When he approached the desk she gave him a warm smile and he could see a few freckles across her nose he found adorable. Well, Tegoshi thought that this might be a very good vacation.

“Good afternoon,” she greeted in a deep voice with a cute tilt to her Japanese. “How can I help you?”

Tegoshi thought there were many ways in which she could help him, but he put on his most winning smile and said: “Hello, my name is Tegoshi Yuya. I have a reservation.”

She typed on her computer and then looked up again. “Yes Tegoshi san, you have room 404,” she said and handed him an electric key. “Will you be needing help with your luggage?”

“No, that’s okay. Thank you,” he looked at the chest tag, congratulated himself when he didn’t stare at her breasts. “Aimee Abreu. That’s a beautiful name. Where is it from?”

“It’s Portuguese. Can I help you with anything else?”

“No, thank you. I guess I’ll see you around.” He smiled at her again and went to the elevator.

“Another flirter,” the other receptionist said. “And you are still staring at him… Oh, my god you liked this one.”

“What? No. I mean he was cute, very handsome, but no.”

“Come on Aimee, how long have you been here? Two years? And you’ve never gone out…”

“I have dated.” Aimee defended herself.

“Right… you should go for it. I think a summer fling will be good for you. This is your last week in the hotel anyway, what’s the worst that can happen?”

The man, Tegoshi san got on the elevator and when he caught her looking he smiled again and she smiled back, with what she thought was a professional one.

Maybe, what’s the worst that could happen?

That night her shift was over and instead of going home she decided to go to the bar of the hotel. She sat on a stool and said hi to the barman. He was a good man and she would miss him when she left.

“Hi.” She turned and saw the guest from that afternoon.

“Hi,” she answered. She was immediately nervous. Tanaka, the other receptionist had been right, she hadn’t really gone out with anybody, let alone slept with anybody, in the two years she’d been there. She took a deep breath trying not to blush at her thoughts.

The man asked for a drink. “You are not working anymore?”

She hesitated and the barman answered for her “Yes, she off for tonight” and gave them their drinks.

“So, you are Portuguese.”

It wasn’t a question, but answered anyway. “Yes, I’ve been here for two years.”

“Wow, why did you came here?”

“I studied Hotel Management and Tourism, when I finished college a professor said he could get me a job here. There aren’t many people who speak Japanese in Portugal so…” She was talking too much. She was so bad at this. She bit her lip and drank from her glass. “What do you do?”

“I’m a flight engineer…”

And just like that they started talking. He was easy to talk to, even though he was flirting, which usually made her nervous. She really liked him but she decided to go home before she drunk too much and did something she’d regret in the morning.

Tegoshi watched her walk away. He was a little disappointed, but the talk had only made him like her more. He shouldn’t be doing this. He had a girlfriend. Granted, they were on the verge of breaking up.

She was off to her town on a family emergency, and she hadn’t even asked him to go with her, and he was on vacations alone, and had only asked her halfheartedly if she wanted to come, and had been a little relieved when she had declined. So, he guessed that relationship was pretty much dead.

“She is a good girl,” he heard the barman say. “Just keep that in mind,” the man finished with narrowed eyes.

The next few days, Tegoshi spent his time talking to her during her breaks. She kept rejecting him every time he asked her for a date. He came to realize she wasn’t the easy girl he had thought at first. The barman had been right, she was a good girl.

He had been in the hotel for three days already and he couldn’t get her out of his mind. It was late, almost four in the morning and he couldn’t sleep. He went to his window, it overlooked the pool. It was a beautiful view. The lights from inside the pool were still on giving it the appearance of a glowing blue butterfly. He noticed a figure walking below. It was a woman. She crouched next to the pool and gently moved her hand inside the water. Weird, the pool was closed to the public at this hour.

It was her, he realized. He knew she had the nightshift; maybe she was on a break. Without thinking about it he threw a shirt on and went downstairs.

Tanaka had told her she would cover the reception for her tonight. It was her last day of work and then she would either go to Tokyo to work in another hotel if she got the job or she would go back home.

She sensed she was not alone and turned around. It was him. Her heart sped up, she was being silly, she knew, it was only a summer fling, and not even that yet.

But she really liked him.

“Hi,” he said.

“Hi,” she answered.

“Would you like some company?”

Her smile widened and nodded.

He sat next to her and they were silent, which was unusual since they always started talking and didn’t stop.

“So…”

“Are you…” They both started at the same time and laughed and they both got close and kissed. Once, twice and then they were locked in a deep kiss. At some point Tegoshi asked her if she wanted to go to his room and she said yes.

The next morning Tegoshi’s ring tone woke them up. She saw his cell phone and picked it up and, without meaning to, she looked at the screen and saw the name. It was a woman’s name with a lot of hearts next to it. She handed it to him. Did he have a girlfriend or a wife? Both options were horrible really.

He answered. The way he spoke was short and didn’t seem too lovey dovey but he was next to a woman he had spent the night with. He hanged up, no I love yous or I’ll see yous.

He didn’t look at her.

“Are you married? I supposed I should have asked that before…”

“I’m not married but I do have a girlfriend.”

“Oh.” She started looking around for her clothes holding the sheets against her, suddenly not wanting him to see her naked… again.

“Wait. It’s not… look, me and my girlfriend are breaking up. It was more a matter of who did it first. I guess neither one had the guts to do it.” He sighed. “I still should have told you but I really like you and well, she never entered my mind when I was with you. And last night was well… pretty awesome.”

He seemed sincere. Of course he could be a very good liar and trying to get her into bed… again. But then, she had known it was just a fling and nothing more from the beginning.

It had been a pretty awesome night and if she was going back home she wanted to have two very awesome last weeks. She went back to bed and kissed him.

They spent the next week going out, seeing the sights. She had study the history and the landmarks of the place and told him about them. They went to the beach, then to his room in the hotel. She wasn’t working, Tegoshi figured she had vacations.

She did blush a little when the people she worked with saw them but they only smiled, they didn’t seem judgmental. She figured they all agree she needed to get laid after 2 years there with virtually no dates, which made her blush even more.

When the time came for him to go back, he did say he didn’t want it to end there but not much more than that, he still had to settle the girlfriend situation. However, they did linger all day. They lingered longer in bed, looking out the window, Tegoshi drawing random patterns on her skin with his fingers. They lingered every time they hold hands and they lingered as they kissed for the last time.

Tegoshi came back to Tokyo, broke up with his girlfriend, who was not very crushed, but when he returned to Okinawa, she was not there and everybody at the hotel told him she had gone back home. She hadn’t told him that was her last week working there and her last week in Japan. He supposed it had meant more to him than to her. That was a twist…

“Aaaww, that was so sad!” Sakurako exclaim. “You are a cheater… but that was so sweet”

“And you never tried looking for her?” Lara asked.

“I thought she had left for Portugal.”

“And do you want to find her?” Koyama asked.

“Well, yeah. I have to know for sure if the baby is mine, and if it is…” All the color left his face again and looked out the window.

“Okay, if you really want to find her…” Tegoshi nodded with his lips pursed tight into a line so Shige went on. “It shouldn’t be too hard to find her. She is probably working in another hotel. How many Portuguese pregnant women can there be working in hotels in the area of that coffee shop?”

It had taken a while but Shige had been right, they had found her and now it was six in the afternoon and Tegoshi was standing outside the hotel where she worked.

His heart was hammering and he was practicing what he would tell her. The first thing would be asking her if the baby was his… with more tact, although he was very sure it was by now, then… He narrowed his eyes.

Aimee was coming out with a guy. A handsome guy. She looked serious but the guy said something and she laughed and nodded. And then the guy leaned over and kissed her affectionately on the cheek.
