Sora’s never been too afraid of the dark either.
He only remembers being really scared twice when he was younger.
The first time was when the neighbor’s cat had slunk into the house at night, and that time hadn’t been so bad, because he’d somehow managed to scrounge up the courage to snatch the flashlight under his pillow and brave the darkness, sprinting through the house screaming at the top of his lungs like a banshee, flailing his arms as he bounded down the stairs after what he thought was a monster.
His Mum had come out clad in pink jammies just in time to find Sora flinging the flashlight at the poor thing.
The other time was a few years later when Riku and Kairi were sleeping over. Kairi was snuggled smack dab in the middle of the bed like a princess, all cozy and warm, and Riku was lying near the wall because of some insane notion that Sora hit people in his sleep, and Sora had taken the edge of the bed because he was the only one who didn’t mind.
It wasn’t particularly hot, or stuffy that night, but Sora just couldn’t fall asleep. As Kairi slept soundly in between them, Sora suddenly noticed the erratic beats of that old Grandfather clock outside his room and he couldn’t explain why, but he just got the horrible creeps.
That’s when Riku sat up and just stared into the black for a really long time. So did Sora.
Riku blinked when Sora finally spoke in the silence and asked what was wrong. Pale-green eyes locked onto cerulean blue when he answered,
“Someone said my name.”
When he’d begun the journey as the keyblade master, Kingdom Key in hand and courage at the ready, he hadn’t been terribly shaken. A little freaked out, and maybe a little frightened along the way when he thought he might fail. But he’d never been truly afraid of the enemies he’d faced because he wanted to bring his friends back to the islands.
Kairi and Riku are back on Destiny Islands now, but Sora thinks maybe things have changed since then.
On nights like tonight, Sora finally thinks he understands what woke Riku.
Because sometimes when he’s caught in that strange few seconds between waking and dreaming, the light from the window will make the shadows sway. That clock will become so loud his ears ring.
Tick
In the silence between the piercing strikes, he can sometimes hear soft syllables. Whispers in the night of creatures he knows aren’t there, but he still imagines are.
Tick.
S…
Because even when he’s done away with all shadows and creepers that grasp and reach for all the things that are wrong in people’s hearts, he still can’t help but imagine them watching from the black. He knows that it’s just the trick of the light. He knows they aren’t really Heartless. Or Nobodies. Or pale reflections of himself.
He knows that it’s over. And he’s still not afraid.
He just can’t stop hearing it.
Tick
So…
His name whispered between the clicks of the clock.
Tock
So-ra…
Sometimes he thinks it’ll never stop.
