I always hate it when people cast hackers in a negative light. If you think of it, they are just really good at their job and far better than the people that released the software. Really if your software gets cracked, you did a shitty job of QA.
i tell people that i "hack" in my spare time and then they look at me funny and say that it's prolly not something i should say in public.
then i tell them that i use the intial definition which is very different than the more modern belief of what the definition is.
if someone finds a problem with a program and notifies the programmers, that's good and i can stand behind them.
those who are bored and find ways to get in and spread the exploit to other people with negative intentions deserve the new consequences that are being developed in the various judicial systems around the world.
I've definitely called up websites before and told them that there was a bug in their software and how to fix it. They really don't know what to say or do when you do that though so it's kind of funny.
It's like getting on someone's unsecure wireless network and instead of doing damage, just leaving a harmless text document on a computer of "Hey, you should lock your network down, people can get in and do bad things if you don't." Makes 'em crap their pants a little.
