I've been pouring over reports of people stuck in New Orleans all day. The scope of devastation, the loss of human life, and the conditions of lawlessness and despair that people are living in now are just sickening. In my mind, with our military and our state of modern technology and transportation, I never would have imagined people could stay ( Read more... )

It is absolutely unexpected. And crazy.

And maybe what shocked me the most was that, even though we couldn't get everyone out right away, we were trying. And then, even though we were trying, we were being fired upon.

Because being truly scared for one's life -- over an extended period of time -- changes people either dramatically or just enough (I haven't figured this one out yet).

Our country has a war zone. I mean, feasibly, people could take over New Orleans right now. Warlords could. (Are they?) The Governor has said that they plan on abandoning the city for 2-3 months. It's really bizarre.

We're not so tough.

I think that's really what it comes down to. Living in America, it's just so easy to fall into the "it could never happen like that here" mindset. But it can, and it does, and it will.
