OVERALL:
Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?
Yeah, this is probably the least I've written in a year for a while. But it's expected as school gets more intense and I have to put my time elsewhere. But writing is still where I feel a sense of creative freedom that I would otherwise go a bit crazy without. It's pretty good stress relief and it's fun!
What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January?
Not much surprise this year. Standard SVTWICE and Kaistal, mostly. Although I probably wouldn't have predicted my twins!mingyu/jiho fic (
peas in a pod).
Did you take any writing risks this year?
Not really? Although for the first time I did a semi-angst SVTWICE drabble with wonwoo/sana (
a place and time) - which I probably wouldn't have thought to do because these two groups are practically made for fluff and crack only.
Do you have any fanfic or profic goals for the New Year?
Basically a repeat of last year: Continue
the not so golden days. Write tons of SVTWICE. Get back on the angst train. Be more creative with plots. Really flesh out characters more, even if it's just a drabble or one-shot.
What were last year's goals?
Look above, lol. I feel like I'm stagnating a bit in my fic writing, always exploring the same themes and tropes. Even using the same word choice, fml. But I feel frustrated because I don't have the luxury of dedicating a lot of time to perfecting my style.
BEST AND WORST:
My best story of this year:
off the charts (vernon/dahyun). It was my longest work, and it had been in the works for quite a while. Because of its length I got to flesh out the plot a bit more and include more characters to make it more interesting. Pretty proud of it to be honest!
My most popular story of this year:
Probably twins!mingyu/jiho
peas in a pod, originally written for thekpop100. Always refreshing to read/write about sibling/family dynamics instead of just romance. And these two seem to strike a chord with people.
Story of mine most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion:
This is the same as last year:
the not so golden days crack "sitcom" because how can one ever get enough of gen fic mini china line?! Please love them they're so ridiculous - I might actually find more motivation to continue the fic x_x
Most fun story to write:
off the charts (vernon/dahyun). Literally cracked myself up a few times while writing it, especially the Boo Seungkwan scenes xD
Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters:
Maybe my wonwoo/sana fic
a place and time? I guess I was used to just seeing them as some cavity-inducing ship, with Wonwoo having a slightly cold exterior but soft interior, and Sana being the one capable to break past his walls. This fic took it in a slightly more abstract direction. I began to see Sana as more fragile than she seems, like a fleeting moment in time. And idk now I associate Wonwoo with more melancholy and solemness (although not necessarily angst).
Hardest story to write:
May not seem like it, but chapter 5 of
the not so golden days. Since I was formatting the story by time stamps, by the end I was sort of running out of ideas (and hence the shorter paragraphs lol. But I guess it fits the mood of the piece hah, that sentiment of slowly giving up but still churning through for the sake of finishing). Also because I've never actually pulled a complete all-nighter for schoolwork before :o so I had to combine some research and imagination - thus didn't come as natural to me. Still happy with the end result though.
Biggest disappointment:
All my Kaistal drabbles tbh. I wish I could do more for my ultimate OTP but after the dating announcement it oddly got more difficult for me to write about them! It's frustrating that my fics were so short and stunted. They're literally the most versatile pairing I know and yet I still can't seem to squeeze anything worthwhile out of my brain :(
Biggest surprise:
Not many surprises in the first place. Don't know.
Most unintentionally telling story:
give it all (take it all) - my jr/suzy fic. There's parts of myself in both these characters.
Favorite opening lines:
none - i actually suck at opening lines :(
Favorite closing lines:
She'll still be crying, and he'll still be pretending that she's his. (jr/suzy -
give it all (take it all))
She swears she hears a bit of heartbreak in his voice, too. (kai/krystal -
love, crash, burn)
Because as much as Los Angeles is perfect, with its sun-kissed skylines and intriguing novelty, Seoul is where she had fallen in love. (kai/krystal -
where the sun never ceases)
Favorite lines in general:
Of course, behind every headline is a story. (kai/krystal -
through the fire)
Yibo strolls as calmly as he can into their dorm room and surveys his desk. He gulps. It looks like a World War III disaster zone, with papers strewn everywhere, various writing utensils sticking out, plastic water bottles ranging from empty to Yibo-forgot-to-finish-me-halfway to I'm-new-and-Yibo-still-forgot-about-me, and he's pretty sure he lost his grilled cheese sandwich in that mess once. Not sure if he ended up finding it or not. (
the not so golden days 5/?)
By the time they’ve reached the prom venue (after hitching a ride with Mingyu and Mina, third- and fourth-wheeling them), Hansol feels like the world is spinning: borderline food coma, formal pants a little tight around the waist, the ever perpetual problem-that-is-not-a-problem that is how pretty Dahyun looks. He keeps staring at her out of the corner of her eye, half wishing that she wouldn’t notice and half wishing that she would. (vernon/dahyun -
off the charts)
He thinks of the sun, his (second) favorite thing (for Sana is the first): how it sank into the ocean, how the strength of its rays felt against his pale skin. (wonwoo/sana -
a place and time)
She opens it and comes face to face with Mingyu, carrying boxes of ramen. “I had too much,” he says sheepishly. “The whole buy-one-get-one-free thing is too much of a habit now,” he winks. “Let’s share?” (mingyu/jiho -
peas in a pod)
WIPs:
donghae/yoona: And this is where he ends up. He looks up, surveying the building before him, his lips almost too frozen to smile. It is kind of fitting, he supposes. There’s still a painful twinge in his heart, like something is twisting it around, wringing it out for the world to see. That’s what Hyukjae always said, that Donghae always wears his heart on his sleeve and every one of his emotions could be seen clearly in his eyes. It’s a double-edged sword, Donghae thinks.
kai/krystal: He rounds the bend again to rest in front of the bird fountain, the place where he’d last seen her. When he came back here for the past couple of days, there was no glimpse of her at all. He had clucked his tongue in disappointment, knowing that an experienced runner like her probably varied her routes daily. He keeps circling around the general area in hopes of seeing her again.
Today, like the others: he comes up empty.
CONCLUSION: will next year be the year I finally slip out of ficdom? Who knows! Although I probably won't write much fic next year either, I hope for more diversity in terms of ships, tropes, settings, themes, etc.! Again, this was an amazing year of friendships, mainly tlist, and I'm so grateful for them :) I also somehow keep getting sucked into new rookie groups fml. I'm going to say that I'm not gonna write fic for them eventually but I don't wanna eat my words later. Anyway, don't now what else to say except - see you on the other side, 2017!
