“Samuuui!” Ruki exclaimed in horror as he stepped his foot outside the studio building. Zipping up his jacket and pulling up the collar he tried to protect his body from the cold wind. In the sky he could see dark clouds moving rapidly, forecasting rain.

Even though it was May already, the spring didn't seem to be getting any closer. A few days of warmth and sunshine were always followed by a week of rain, and Ruki had started to wonder whether the spring would ever come at all.

He heard a chuckle from beside him and looked at the drummer who was smiling at him. Kai had insisted on coming with him even though he didn't even smoke. “To get some fresh air” had his words been. Of course, Ruki didn't mind the company.

“What?” He sent a questioning look Kai's way, fishing out a pack of cigarettes from the chest pocket of his jacket.

“It's never good enough for you, is it?” Kai laughed.

Ruki tapped the pack a few times with his finger until the end of one cigarette was sticking out. Wrapping his lips around it he pulled it out, putting the pack back inside his pocket.

“What makes you say that?” He asked absentmindedly as he tried to find his lighter from somewhere inside his clothes.

“Well...”, Kai started but then stopped, shaking his head in amusement as he noticed the black lighter peeking out from the hip pocket of Ruki's jeans.

Taking it out he raised it in front of the brunette's face whose eyes instantly got round from surprise. Flicking it on Kai put his other hand as the wind barrier and waited till Ruki had lit his cigarette. Then he put the lighter back to where he'd taken it from and gave Ruki's bum a small tap as if to remind him where the lighter was located.

“Thanks”, the vocalist said a little embarrassed, a hint of red adorning his cheeks. Taking a long drag of the cigarette he closed his eyes, instantly feeling his body relaxing. They'd been in the studio for four hours already that day but it seemed like they'd gotten nothing done during that time. He still hadn't even finished the lyrics for the last song on the single. Needless to say, he was starting to get quite frustrated.

As he finally blew out the smoke, he squinted his eyes open, looking at Kai. “You were saying?” He asked, the smoke dangling from his lips, ready to drop any moment.

Kai chuckled. “Was just to say that I haven't heard anything but complaining from you today.”

“Not true!” Ruki burst out almost offended, thanking god for his quick reflexes as he managed to catch the falling cigarette in midair. With a displeased grunt he placed it back between his lips, hand dusting off the scattered ashes from his coat.

“Yes, it is”, Kai laughed, “First the air conditioning was bad. Then the coffee was too hot... You even complained about Reita sneezing at one point and told him to go outside if he needed to make so much noise.”

Ruki's lips turned to a pout and Kai couldn't help but laugh kindheartedly at the sight. Patting the vocalist's head, he chuckled, “You're cute when you get like that”.

Ruki could feel his cheeks heating up at Kai's comment. Trying to hide it from the drummer, he hid his face behind the collar of his jacket as much as he could and mumbled a quiet “shut up” before taking a quick drag of his cigarette again. Kai gave Ruki a smile before turning his face away from the other man.

“Though it really is cold for May, ne”, he said after a moment of silence, more to himself than to Ruki.

“Un..”, Ruki still gave him a small nod, eyes directed at the drummer, watching him closely. Ruki didn't know if it was just his imagination but lately Kai had been looking rather downhearted. Even when he was smiling or laughing, there was a sad undertone to it. For some reason, it made Ruki's heart ache.

And now, maybe it was the greyness of the day, the dark rain clouds and the howling of the wind, but as Kai was standing there on the empty parking lot, the wind blowing through his hair -to Ruki- Kai seemed lonely. And as he looked at the lean figure of the drummer, he would have just wanted to wrap his arms around him, sealing him to a warm embrace.

He wondered if it was because he could relate to him so well. For he knew more than well the feeling of loneliness. After all, it had kept him awake, preventing him from falling asleep on more nights than he could count. It was suffocating...

Ruki could feel a knot forming inside his throat. Hand over his heart he clutched onto his jacket, crumbling the material inside his fist. There it was again; that ache.

“Ne, Ruki..?”, Kai's words brought him back from his thoughts and he noticed that Kai was now facing him. The wind whirled some lonely curls of hair before Kai's eyes and there was something in those dark orbs that Ruki couldn't quite decipher.

“Hm?”

There was a moment of silence until Kai spoke again, his lips spelling out an unexpected question. And still long after Kai's lips had stopped moving, the words echoed in Ruki's ears, fading out all other sound.

“Would you mind if I kissed you?”

As Kai started walking towards him, it felt like everything else around them had stopped moving. There was only him and Kai. And it all happened in slow-motion in his eyes; How Kai came to a halt right in front of him, fingers taking a hold of the cigarette that was still dangling from Ruki's lips and pulling it out. How it fell as Kai let go of it, twirling in the air before landing on the small puddle of water next to their feet, the fire in it slowly dying.

He felt Kai's touch as the drummer gently took a hold of his chin, making Ruki focus his eyes back on him. Not even daring to blink he watched how Kai's eyelids closed, the thick eyelashes fluttering slightly as his face was drawing nearer by each lifelong second. Without even realizing it, Ruki had stopped breathing, just waiting for Kai's lips to find his.

And after what seemed like an eternity it finally happened.

It was a slow kiss. A gentle kiss. One that made the butterflies flutter even inside the stomach of a grown man. One that caused your cheeks to flush and heartbeat to quicken, rushing the blood through your veins with such speed that your whole body tickled. It could wash away all thought and sound, except for the beating of your own heart, making it sound like drumming in your ears.

Ruki felt his knees getting weak and he was afraid he might fall. All the control over his body as well as his strength seemed to be absorbed by Kai as he gently moved his lips over Ruki's.

Eventually Kai pulled back but only enough to let them breathe. The soft touch and taste of his lips still lingered on Ruki's. The drummer's forehead resting on his own Ruki watched as Kai slowly opened his eyes again yet his gaze remained downcasted, fixed on the slightly parted lips so close to his own.

His hot breath burned Ruki's skin.

“Would you mind if I kissed you again?”

And all Ruki could bring himself to do was a small shake of his head until he felt the plush pair of lips press against his own, capturing them for another kiss.
