It's less cliques and more clannish here in Scituate, I know what you mean. NY was the same way as you're describing AL. You have circles of friends sort've orbiting each other up here, just in a generalized haze, you know?
My take on social barriers are that they only affect you if you allow them to. Some would be able to place me in one particular "group" or another, but if they were too, then they do not know me or the people I know. I have friends in almost every social group, so where does that put me? If you allow a barrier to effect your judgement on people and go about with a mentality that it is hard to socialize with someone based on some social barrier that may exist, you are giving it to social stigmas

Well, re: barriers in AL, it's not that I was afraid of talking to them. It's that I didn't want to. I didn't really want to talk to anyone, save for my closest 2 or 3 friends, because I hated having to explain myself. I can clarify for you later.
