Welcome To The Family (Short Drabble)

Kurt was like a freakin’ a ninja detective and it scared the crap out of Puck. The guy had a gaydar way too proficient for a dude who never got laid. With the realization that he knew about stuff he shouldn’t know about, Puck figured he had to make a discreet visit to the Hummels. It wasn’t like he was going to beat Kurt up, or even be a dick (on purpose). He just wanted to set the record straight face to face, none of this instant messaging crap. He was a man, damn it. Real men dealt with stuff properly.

As he drove carefully across spanning gravel and asphalt, Puck wasn’t sure why he was even bothering with this visit - it wasn’t like Hummel was even a threat to his relationship with Finn and wow, he never thought he’d think of it like that, but… shit. Okay. Focus. Brain. Work. Okay? Awesome. His hands settled against the tan material spanning his truck’s dashboard as he tried to somehow calm himself. Between the heat from the sun and the slowly ebbing warmth of autumn, he could feel himself slowly drain of all that nervous anger. It all definitely had something to do with being out of the house - he’d been hella sick for the past few weeks.

The glint of silver on his finger didn’t hurt the feeling at all. A smile curled the corner of his lips as he examined the anniversary gift with mild pride. So he’d commited to a relationship - he didn’t hate it too much. It was different, sure, but Finn kept him in his place and didn’t put up with his bullshit excuses. It worked. They worked.

With his confidence assured, Puck slung his arm over the back of his seat and reversed into the parking spot just outside Kurt’s house. After straightening his jacket and jeans (and trying to look at least half-way presentable), he staggered towards the house. Yeah, so, his legs were really against this idea apparently. Great.

After knocking on the door for an extended period of time Puck just let himself in. It wasn’t like the door was locked or anything. It was also totally worth it for the look of fear and annoyance on Kurt’s face as he approached the front door.

“Aren’t you capable of waiting for two seconds?” he snipped, his hands settled on his hips. The pair didn’t get along and it wasn’t a secret. "Why're you here exactly?"

Puck squared his shoulders and lifted his chin as he examined Kurt. “Listen Hummel, I’m here about what you said to Finn -”

“I’m not interested in Finn, you realize that don’t you?”

“No, shut up, I’ve seen the way you look at him. Just ‘cause he’s my… he’s seeing me doesn’t mean he’s gonna want you.”

Kurt flashed an annoyed look at Puck, “I notice you can’t even say the word boyfriend. Finn seemed reluctant, yes, but you can at least afford him that respect Puckerman,” he sneered, his arms haughtily crossed over his chest.

Puck’s fists clenched and unclenched, a sneer forming across his face, “Honestly? What I call Finn isn’t even your business. You’re his brother or whatever, you should just be happy for him. Stop making this a big deal ‘cause you missed out and I got him.”

“He isn’t some prize -”

“Don’t even pull that bullshit,” Puck dismissed with his hands thrown up in the air. To Kurt’s credit, he didn’t waver as Puck moved. The two issued matching sighs, their body language stupidly similar. “Look. Whatever, I just came over to say that - like - I know I’m a dick. I’m pretty douchey and awful, but,” he paused, dragging his hand firmly through his Mohawk, “I’m not out to fuck over Finn. At all.”

“And?”

Puck tried to hold back a sharp retort. It was this passive-aggressive annoyance between them that was getting more apparent the closer Puck got to Finn. It was jealousy, he could tell. “And that should count for something, right?” he winced at his own patheticness (which wasn’t even a freakin’ word), “Look. Whatever, just stop giving Finn a hard time ‘cause he’s happy. When you start dating a guy we’ll be happy for you. You’re gonna end up with some awesome guy and it’ll be different - you know that, right?"

Kurt seemed to bite back his own snippy comments as he saw what Finn saw in Puck. That subtle, gentle, loyal side of him that no one really knew existed. But it was definitely there, and it wasn't going away. He sighed, crossing and recrossing his arms before waving a hand at the other boy. "I know I'm going to find someone. I'm not stupid. And you two being together doesn't affect me. I actually approve."

"You do?"

"Although you're not my most favorite person ever, I like you a lot more than I like Rachel," Kurt pointed out with a deft shrug, "and honestly? I'd rather you got Finn. It'd show her that just because she's a girl she won't win Finn's affection."

"Huh?"

"Long story."

"I have time," Puck shrugged, his hands tucked in his pockets. He spared Kurt a warm smile, feeling they'd hit a level point of their relationship where they weren't going to try and stab one another at the first opportunity they had. And it was thanks to Finn. The pair had a lot to be thankful for, and maybe that was how they'd patch up a very broken relationship. With their mutual love of the goofy, confused quarterback who thought smelly markers were the best invention since penicillin.
