HISTORY
There are SPOILERS in Kurogane's history, up to and including chapter 211! ;o; You have been forewarned~
Kurogane was born in the country of Japan, in the province of Suwa; he was originally named Youou. The son of the Suwa lord and his wife (the miko who maintained the protective barrier around Suwa), Youou had an almost idyllic childhood. He had a close relationship with his parents, learning swordplay from his father and frequently going out of his way to make his mother happy. However, as he approached his teenage years things began to go downhill. His mother contracted tuberculosis and the condition made her task as Suwa's miko very difficult to fulfill. At the same time monster attacks against Suwa became more frequent, forcing Youou's father away from home more and more often -- and it all came to a head one day, when Youou was only fifteen. Youou's father had encountered a particularly nasty breed of demon, failed to subdue, and returned home. His katana had been shattered, and he instead collected their family heirloom, the sword Ginryu, before he returned to the fight. Youou's mother placed a blessing on the sword and then her husband left for battle again, leaving Youou behind to protect their home. It... didn't work out. Fei Wong Reed, a man from another world (though Youou didn't know either of these facts at the time), ripped open a rift into Suwa and killed Youou's mother, impaling her on a sword before swiftly withdrawing it and closing the rift behind him. Youou was through the door and at his mother's side in record time, but the wound was too severe; Youou's mother only lasted a few moments more before she passed away.
With the passing of Suwa's miko, the protective barrier around Suwa collapsed and the encroaching demons were able to enter the city. Weaponless and still shellshocked from his mother's sudden death, Youou didn't react much as one such demon knocked down the wall of his home... until he saw what was in said demon's mouth: his father's arm, still gripping the sword his he had returned for only hours earlier. The sword slipped from the deathgrip and fell to the ground as the demon chewed and swallowed the arm, and as the blade plunged into the ground the sheer enormity of what had been done to his family and city overwhelmed Youou. The young man snapped, took up his father's sword, and destroyed the demon that stood in front of him -- and then did the same to everything else that approached him. Hours later, when a convoy from the capital city arrived, there wasn't much left to see. The demons were no longer present, yes, but Suwa was gone, too. Youou was still stuck in his crazed state and clutching his mother's dead body. When one of the Empress' ninjas, a woman by the name of Souma, attempted to use her subordinates to subdue him, he attacked without ever really realizing that they weren't his enemies. Realizing that he couldn't be calmed down easily, if at all, the Empress moved to deal with him herself -- and was stopped by, of all people, her younger sister (who served as the miko of the capital city). Requesting that her sister wait, the young princess stepped forward, summoned up a magic arrow, and used it to pierce through Youou's left hand and pin him to a pillar. While he was still struggling to free himself, the princess moved forward, closed his mother's eyes, and gently told him to let her rest in peace.
It was enough to break him out of his crazed state, and the reality of what had happened finally struck him. The young man broke down into tears, and immediately after exhaustion took him. When he woke he was laying in a bed in the royal castle, cleaned up, in a clean change of clothes, and with his hand bandaged. The princess was at his side, with his father's sword in hand, and explained where they were. Kurogane requested that the sword be buried with his mother, as his father no longer had a body to cremate, and Tomoyo assured him that a replica of the sword would be created for him to continue to use. It was then that the princess properly introduced herself, giving the name Tomoyo; Youou returned the greeting, but gave the name 'Kurogane' instead. From then on, Kurogane remained at the castle as a loyal, if rarely obedient, servant to Tomoyo -- and absolutely no one else. He had already surpassed his father in terms of strength and rapidly gained a reputation for being a fierce, powerful warrior... and a loose canon, not even listening when Tomoyo requested that the assassins that attempted to enter the castle not be killed. A decade passed before Tomoyo ostensibly had enough; she placed a charm on Kurogane to protect him from a certain man's magic, though Kurogane was instead told that this was a curse that would lessen his strength with each person he killed. With that, Kurogane was sent to another dimension, to the shop of Yuuko, and it was there that the ninja's life got really... really weird. He quickly learned that the only way to get back home was to travel with three other dimension jumpers... and that he would need to give up his sword to do it. Though furious, Kurogane agreed, swearing to come back and retrieve his sword someday. And so his journey began!
He wanted nothing to do with his companions. The princess, Sakura, he had no opinion on. The kid, Syaoran, was honest, earnest, and determined, but also painfully naive about a lot of things. Their mode of transportation, Mokona, annoyed Kurogane to absolutely no end. And the mage, Fai... well, Fai bothered Kurogane, and not just because the mage went out of his way to give him an increasingly annoying list of irritating nicknames. Still, he traveled with them, and despite his insistence that he would do otherwise he still helped the group locate the princess' scattered feathers. Though Kurogane never wavered from his goal of returning home and to Tomoyo's side, over the following months he grew rather more close to his new friends that he had anticipated. Along the way, he gained a somewhat acceptable replacement for Ginryu: a sword by the name of Souhi. In a city called Tokyo their adventure took a turn for the worse, and by the time they left Sakura had been severely injured, Syaoran had lost his borrowed soul, betrayed the group, and been replaced by the one he was cloned from, Fai's left eye and half of his magic had been stolen by the cloned Syaoran in a process that nearly killed him, forcing the blond to be transformed into a vampire to save his life, and Kurogane had been bound to Fai as the mage's only food source -- an event that placed an incredible strain on their relationship.
Things did not improve for some time; several months later a curse placed on Fai by Fei Wong Reed drove him to kill Sakura (sort of) in the country of Infinity, and shortly afterward Kurogane, Fai, Mokona, and the original Syaoran (who had traveled with them since his clone had betrayed the group) left that world for Celes -- the world Fai had been avoiding returning to, and the one where Sakura's body had been transported after Fai attacked her. Before leaving, Fai used his magic to seal Souhi inside Kurogane's left arm, so that the ninja could have the sword at his side whenever he needed it. In Celes they encountered Ashura -- the reason Fai was so desperately avoiding his home -- and things once again took a turn for the worse. Ashura revealed to Syaoran, Mokona, and Kurogane Fai's history, and shortly thereafter a three-way fight broke out. Ashura tried to drive Fai to kill him so that Fai's second curse (also placed on him by Fei Wong Reed) couldn't activate, threatening the lives of Syaoran, Kurogane, and Sakura's soulless body in turn. Ultimately (after a near-death experience in which Tomoyo gave him a critical piece of advice) it was Kurogane who ended the fight; the 'curse' Tomoyo had placed on him many months ago was intended to protect him from Ashura's magic, and it did exactly that, allowing Kurogane to strike the king down.
Unfortunately, that was trigger for Fai's second curse: someone other than Fai himself killing Ashura. The second curse caused Fai's magic to draw in on the mage and drag the entire world of Celes in with it, destroying them both. Kurogane was trapped inside the magical sphere keeping Fai contained at first, but Mokona's earring cored a hole into the sphere that Kurogane could escape through. That only Kurogane could escape through, it turned out, because when Kurogane tried to drag Fai with him, he couldn't. Fai told them to leave without him, and Kurogane let go of the mage's arm. He immediately cut off his own left arm, leaving it, the magic it contained, and Souhi in the sphere in exchange for Fai. He grabbed the mage and hauled him out, and Mokona transported the two of them, Syaoran, and Sakura's body into the next world. Kurogane didn't have time to figure out where they were; he had lost too much blood, and shortly after arriving he collapsed and passed out. When he awoke, he was once again in a room in Nihon's royal palace, injuries tended to and with Tomoyo at the bedside. Kurogane's arm was beyond recovery, as was Souhi, and while Kurogane knew he could manage without his left arm, the sword was another matter. He told Tomoyo that he intended to dig up his parents' graves in order to retrieve the original Ginryu -- and Tomoyo revealed that she had never buried it in the first place, knowing Kurogane would need it again some day.
Similarly, Yuuko had arranged for a replacement, cybernetic arm to be delivered to Kurogane, which Fai paid for using the remaining half of his magic. From there, the remaining group -- Kurogane, Syaoran, Fai, and Mokona -- traveled to the next world, the Kingdom of Clow. A version of Clow, at any rate, a span of half a day that had been removed from time and trapped in an endless loop. The first day they were there an invitation to Toujours was foisted off on Kurogane, but the ninja took one look at the contents, absently discarded it, and promptly forgot the incident. Several cycles of the 12-hour loop passed before the group was finally able to proceed to their next destination: the ruins within the country of Clow. There they encountered the cloned Syaoran and Fei Wong Reed, but the fight that broke out was an odd one; the cloned Syaoran switched sides halfway through the fight, saving the original Syaoran in the process but getting himself killed as he did so. The clone returned the magic his stole to Fai, restoring the mage's eye in the process, and perished shortly afterward. Fei Wong Reed quickly learned why killing the clone was a mistake. Kurogane, Fai, and Syaoran pressed the attack, drawing Fei Wong Reed far enough out of his world and into theirs for Kurogane to get in close and slice him clean in half. Or so he had thought, at least. The magic connecting the two dimensions went, for a lack of a better word, wonky. Kurogane lingered there long enough to catch sight of Kyle Rondart, a man they'd encountered in a previous world, before he suddenly found himself in the lobby of a hotel, sword still bloody and adrenaline still surging through his system.
PERSONALITY
On the surface Kurogane is a loud, impatient, mean, and inconsiderate person, and as far at the ninja is concerned it's just fine with him if other people think of him that way. He's slow to let himself get close to others and quick to claim he simply doesn't give a damn about them. Their problems aren't his problems, after all! He's constantly serious and when he does let his emotions show, he can seem downright psychotic. His grins are often smug or bloodthirsty, his fury is a thing to be reckoned with, and when he decides he's done showing you mercy there's not much to stop him from outright killing you, or at the very least maiming you severely. His temper is short and he's prone to exploding when teased.
On the other side of the coin, you'll be hard pressed to find a better friend. In truth, Kurogane is compassionate, perceptive, and fiercely loyal to his friends. He has a record for surprising people with how easily he can see through them, and when he brings this to their attention it's often a sure sign that he actually gives a damn about them. He's not a very gentle friend, of course. He's got a blunt manner of speaking no matter what and doesn't hesitate to speak his mind, even when his words might hurt someone, but this is especially true in the case of the people he does care about. Certain truths might hurt to hear to be laid out in such plain terms but that isn't going to stop Kurogane. Lying to someone to make them feel better isn't going to help anything, and for Kurogane it can be a sign of respect that he'll both speak to someone and not bother to sugarcoat it in the process.
When Kurogane does find someone he cares about, he can become fiercely, violently protective of that person. Ever since Tomoyo broke Kurogane out of his grief-crazed state after his parents were killed, the ninja has been an effective, violent defender of the princess, killing anyone that attempted to do her harm (often much to Tomoyo's chagrin). Since he was a child Kurogane has had an overarching goal to become stronger, stronger than anyone else, so that no one could bring harm to those he was protecting, and since his parents died this goal has only been further cemented in his mind. A surefire way to set Kurogane on a manhunt is to injure or kill one of his important people. These important people are still rather small in number, of course, but Kurogane doesn't view that as being to his detriment.
Though Kurogane is willing to serve those he deems worthy (Tomoyo is the only one that has ever occupied such a status) the ninja is far from subservient. Even with someone he's sworn his loyalty to he'll be as blunt, to the point, and rude as ever, oftentimes to the offense of those around him (notably Souma, in the case of Tomoyo). He's not very good about doing what he's told, either, especially when it comes to someone telling him how to do his job -- that is, protecting people. Tomoyo requested multiple times that Kurogane not kill the assassins that infiltrated the castle, yet Kurogane ignored her in favor of brutally murdering anyone that dared to even try to bring her harm.
A notable quirk of Kurogane's is that he doesn't call people by their names, not even with honorifics attached. All throughout their journey Syaoran has been 'kid', Sakura as been 'princess', Mokona has been 'meatroll', Fai has been 'mage' or a variety of less flattering 'nicknames', etc. This habit extends even towards those Kurogane considers close friends or companions, and the only exceptions to this thus far have been Souma and Tomoyo herself -- and in both of these cases, honorifics are dropped entirely.
SAMPLE
This wasn't where Kurogane had been hoping to end up. In fact, he hadn't been hoping to end up anywhere, except perhaps with his sword in one of Fei Wong Reed's vital organs. The fact that he was here was enough to make him unspeakably furious, and for a few (fortunately short) moments, Kurogane struggled with his barely hinged rage before abruptly whirling around and stalking back towards the doors.
Only to discover them soundly locked.
Kurogane let out a wordless snarl and struck the glass as hard as he could, and was only dully surprised when the glass failed to crack or outright shatter. He was already willing to expect that this was (or at least could be) some sort of illusion or mind game, likely crafted by Fei Wong Reed himself. Well, fine. If this was a trick or a trap, there was a way out of it. Kurogane intended to find it.
In addition, here are some samples from other games.
