Epilogue I

Kurogane stirred under the pile of blankets, and grunted.

“Good morning, sunshine!” Fai called, from the other side of the blankets.

“Is the window closed?”

“Mm. I closed it a few minutes ago. It is still cold out here though.”

Kurogane poked his head out from under the blankets and his face was met with a blast of cold air. He shook his head-that was one way to wake up.

“Sorry. Would you like me to charm the air a little warmer?”

“No, it’s fine. I’m used to it.”

“Kuro-pie.” Fai said, with the exasperation of having said this many times already, “You’re not used to it. You need heat. I could sleep in my own room-”

“No.” Kurogane interrupted immediately.

“So you could be warm at night.” Fai finished, sitting up so he could see the ninja’s face. “I am still healing, but you should not have to freeze.”

“It’s fine under the blankets.”

“And me, outside the blankets.” Fai hoped he did not sound as sulky as he felt, “It is hardly like sharing a bed at all.”

Kurogane grumbled, “It’s better than you and me not in the same bed.”

Fai grinned widely. “My Kuro-min really is a romantic at heart!”

“Shut up.”

“But-”

“Winter only lasts for a few months here. I’ll be fine.” Kurogane looked at the mage with serious eyes. “But what about you?”

“Hm?”

“When winter is over and it starts to warm up again-will you be okay?”

“I have already healed quite a lot.” Fai said as he laid down beside the ninja again. “It will take me longer to recover in the heat, but it should not make me any weaker.”

Fai snuggled closer to him through the blankets. They were not touching in any way, but their presence was a comfort to each other.

“I hate cold,” Fai sighed. “I want to be warm again.”

“You will be. In time.”

“I want to have sex with you again.”

Kurogane grinned. “Don’t worry. You definitely will.”

“You know ...” Fai murmured, rolling over to face the ninja. “I might not be strong enough for sex yet ...” His cold nose bumped gently against Kurogane’s, their lips close. “But I think I am strong enough for other things ...”

“Other things ...?” Kurogane questioned, hopeful and a bit suspicious.

“Mmm ...” Fai reached a hand into the blankets. “Like ...”

Kurogane made a very undignified noise as the magician’s hands found their prize. “Your hands are freezing!”

Fai giggled unrepentantly. “They will warm up, Kuro-pon ...”

Kurogane kissed cold lips, tasted a cold tongue. It was not entirely pleasant, but it was definitely Fai. It had been too long since he and Fai had been together-they had spent about two months in Celes (two months was his best guess; he had not counted the days and time there seemed to pass very strangely) while Fai was recovering.

Somehow that two months in Celes had spanned exactly twenty-two months and twenty-one days in his Japan. The two had returned as winter had begun again in this world, just as the air was turning sharp with chill. They had been home a few weeks already, and the first snowfall had happened a few days ago. Which meant that the room, with the window open to keep Fai cold and aid his healing, was freezing. Fai had put heating charms on the blankets, so Kurogane slept fine-as long as he did not throw the blankets off in the middle of the night.

Kurogane had patience, he wanted Fai to heal completely and he did not want to do anything to jeopardize that. But it had been a long time, and despite patience he still wanted.

Fai’s hands were now moving on him slowly, too slowly. His early morning erection had revived after the shock of cold hands and was now even harder, demanding satisfaction. But Fai only continued to stroke him at a leisurely pace, despite the ninja’s hips trying to urge him faster.

“Damn tease,” he growled against the mage’s lips.

“I want to make this good for you ...” Fai returned in a murmur. “So good for you, my Kuro-muffin ...”

“Calling me names like that is not the best way to go about it.”

“Then my Kuro-ki should shut up, and let Fai-” His hand squeezed tighter and his fingers twisted over the head of Kurogane’s cock, “do that.”

“Better,” Kurogane gasped.

“Mmm ... you like that ...?”

“Yes ...”

“What else do you like ...?”

“I like it ...” Kurogane moaned a little and his hips began to rock up into the rhythm of the mage’s hand. “... when you ...”

“When I ...” Fai reached down with his unoccupied hand and cupped the other man’s balls, rolling and rubbing them gently. “... do this ...?”

“... yes ...”

“I like you ...” Fai whispered against his ear, “like this ...”

Fai always felt a touch of amazement that Kurogane would allow him this. That Kurogane would let Fai touch him, let Fai kiss him, let Fai see him like this. That Kurogane would let himself be this vulnerable to Fai; this trusting. That in itself was overwhelming.

Fai knew how lucky he was to have this, for this beautiful man to want him, to love him. Fai would never, ever take that for granted, not for one second. He knew he did not deserve this kind of happiness, but he had decided that he would not let that stop him from having it. This was his now, his and Kurogane’s, and he was going to hold onto it and never let go.

Kurogane growled in appreciation when the magician’s hand, now warm from friction and transferred body heat, quickened its strokes over his cock. His lips found Fai’s again and his tongue pushed into the other man’s mouth, happy to discover that it was now warm as well.

Their tongues met, Fai’s tongue flirting with his. Kurogane’s tongue followed his into the mage’s mouth and Fai sucked lightly on it. Kurogane groaned; Fai hummed happily.

Kurogane’s hips began to thrust into Fai’s hands with more deliberation now. Fai complied, his rhythm increasing to match the ninja’s. Kurogane moved back, away from Fai’s face, to look into his eyes. Red met blue, gazes locked for an intense moment.

For an moment, Fai could feel love so strongly it was almost tangible, as if he could reach out a hand and grab it from the air.

Kurogane groaned again as his hips twisted up off the bed, fucking himself hard into Fai’s fist as he came. Under the blankets, Fai kept his hand moving, ignoring the sticky mess.

Kurogane recovered quickly and freed his arm from the blankets so he could grab Fai and pull the mage on top of him. “Your turn.” he said, grinning wolfishly, as he reached a hand into the other man’s pants.

“Oh, um-”

“Huh?”

“It does not work yet.” Fai explained, a little apologetically. “Too cold.”

Kurogane frowned in confusion. “But I thought ...”

“Um. Sorry?”

“You mean you knew I wouldn’t be able to do the same for you?”

“It is not like I did not enjoy it.” Fai told him, honestly. Then he amended, “Perhaps not as much as you.” He laid down again, snuggling against the ninja through the blankets. “But I wanted to.”

“Doesn’t seem very fair.” Kurogane grumbled. He laid down and turned toward the blond man, their faces close again; he took advantage of that and kissed the magician’s cool lips.

“You can make it up to me.” Fai murmured, contentedly. “When winter is over.”

“Mm.” Kurogane promised, “When winter’s over.”

Epilogue II

Across the lake, the sky was dark with thunderclouds. Lightening flashed in the air above the dark treetops. The air was thick and heavy with the promise of rain.

“Are you sure you want to do this?”

“Yes.”

Fai held the torch out to the pyre and lit it. Fire crackled, caught, blazed up. His white clothes burned, turning the colour of ash. Turning to ash.

Those clothes were the last evidence of his other world, the world he had left behind. The last physical memento of Celes, the world he would never return to. Fai did not need the clothes to remember. He had too many memories of Celes as it was. He would never forget, no matter how much he wanted to.

“Are you going to burn your cane too?”

Frowning, Fai looked down at his cane. It was made of a silvery everblue branch, simple and sturdy. Kurogane had made it for him and it had served him well.

It was from Celes, but it had nothing to do with the life he had lived there. It would be a reminder that he would never have to return there, a reminder that he could not do everything on his own, a reminder that he and Kurogane had won.

A reminder that nothing comes without its price.

Fai smiled as a few raindrops splashed warm against his face. “No. This I think I will keep.”

A second later, the sky opened up and sent a deluge to earth.

Fai laughed. He turned his face up to the rain and held out his arms.

“Come on, idiot.” Kurogane grabbed one of his hands and tugged. “Being struck by lightening is not how I plan to meet my glorious end.”

“Yes, Kuro-pon!” Fai agreed cheerfully. He followed the ninja toward the palace, where he planned to get them both out of these wet clothes as soon as possible.
