Ryosuke take a deep breath before releasing it. He stare at the big signboard in front of him. ‘Town Library’ it written.
“Okay here I go…” slowly Ryosuke walk to the front door and slide the door open. As soon as he step inside the library, his nose smells a smell that only come from a book. Yeah, the library is reek with the smell of thousands of book and seriously… Ryosuke hate it.
Ryosuke walk to the counter. A middle age women is greeting him and ask what she could do for him. With a stern face, he said it; “I’m looking for a book. No, a novel actually. Yeah I’m looking for a novel and I want you to help me find the best novel in this library.”
Playback few days ago…
“Fail again, seriously? Wow Ryosuke you are making a record of the student who got so many fail in his high school student life.” Daiki said as he examining Ryosuke’s test paper.
“tcks.” Ryosuke clicked his tongue. “I just don’t understand how people can stand facing so many hard word compiled in one thick book plus no picture. I’m okay if it’s about number but… English, classic language, history, literature… urgh!!” he groan.
Daiki shake his head. He know Ryosuke is not a dummy, he just hate to read too many boring words. He still could remember that Ryosuke had told him when their still a little kids that if he read too many books with a lot of words, he was afraid that one day his brain will burst out and explode.
What a stupid way of thinking… Daiki thought. “Look Ryosuke, I know you are the best student in math and all things involving with numbers but only that are not enough you know. The final test is not so long and I really hope you will get a better result. Remember… it decided your future Ryosuke, it will decided what will happen to you after you graduate from high school.”
“Blaa, blaa, blaa… Dai-chan you are blabbing an old hag. I know it is important but I really can’t help myself who dislike it so much. All this time the only book with lot of word that I like to read is manga. Else? Sayonara…”
“Think of it carefully Ryosuke. No one can help you if you who doesn’t want to help yourself.” With that Daiki leave Rosuke seat to go back to his own seat because the teacher already come in to start the next class.

Ryosuke walk slowly along the corridor with only one intention in his mind that is no other than wanting to skip the class. Earlier his class is about to have their classic language class started and thanks to his small body, Ryosuke can easily sneak out from his class.
Actually, Ryosuke is smart enough and know that thinking that reading too much and your head will end up explode was the most stupid way of thinking in the whole universe. He already stop thinking like that since long ago but like what we always heard people said… bad habits hard to stop. And Ryosuke is considering his can’t read a book with lot of hard to understand word as his bad habit.
“Can I hope for a miracle to happen?” He asked. Then he heard his mind speaking to him. Miracle only happen if there is effort. “Gosh… what am I going to do now?”
Without Ryosuke realize it, he already standing in front of the door to the rooftop of the west building. This can also be considerate as his bad habit. Because of what? Each time Ryosuke feels like skipping the class he will go here and slept. I seriously need to change the place sometimes, it will be bad if teacher know about this and start searching for me here to drag me back to the class or worse, to the discipline teacher.
Ryosuke spread his arm as he take a long breath letting the fresh oxygen coming from up here to enter his body. “Soooo relaxing!!!” He exclaimed happily and not realizing that his loud voice had disturbing a figure that sitting not far from where Ryosuke is standing.
“Hey, could you please slow down your voice.” Said someone coming from behind Ryosuke in raged tone.
“Huh?!” Ryosuke quickly turn around and found someone sitting alone while resting his back on the wall with a book at his hand. “Sorry, did I just disturb your reading time?”
“If your realize it, then you should stop doing like that. Thank you.” That guy ignored Ryosuke and continue reading his book.
Ryosuke on the other side are examining the guy from his hair until the shoes. From what Ryosuke see, the guy is quite a tall person, wearing a glasses and… love to read? But why do he feels like had meet this guy before? If only Ryosuke could remove his glasses and restyle his hair…
“What are you thinking you are doing weirdo!!”
“Ah-AHH!!!” Ryosuke exclaimed when he realize that he is crouching down and only an inch away from the guy. What more, his hand were trying to pull off that guy glasses. In a flash, Ryosuke move back a few meters away from the guy. He is so shock with what he almost done earlier. No, he wasn’t going to do something awful, he just try to take off his glasses that’s all. Wait, it does sound awful right. Anyway Ryosuke is now bowing his body a few time to the guy while muttering sorry for what he almost done to him.
The latter sigh and put his book aside. “It’s okay, stop bowing to me.”
“Oh, umm okay.”
Later then the guy on his own will take off his glasses and restyle his own hair. And now… Ryosuke know with who he just mess up with earlier. “Ehh! You are Nakajima Yuto!” Ryosuke almost had a heart attack with what he just saw. Nakajima Yuto one of the famous guy from the next class sitting alone here wearing a glasses with a messy hair and reading a book, Ryosuke just can’t help his self from saying…
“Wow, Nakajima-san… I didn’t know that you got a very bad eye sight. You are wearing a thick glasses with your hair all mess up. Wait, why are you looking this?”
“Shut up, what a person like you knows about me anyway.” He answered sarcastically.
“Now then I have to ask for you to keep what you just see as a secret. Could you promise me that, Yamada Ryosuke?”
Ryosuke startle when he heard Yuto call his name. “How do you know my name?”
“Stop asking the obvious, of course I know. Everyone know the Ryosuke who is smart in math but dumb in other subjects.”
“Seriously, was I that famous? Man… I never knew about this.” Ryosuke feel a little proud of his self even though that he was famous with his bad habits. Then he don’t know why, but a very good idea to solve his bad habit just popup into his mind. That might be working.
“Of course I could keep silent with your secret. But… you will have to do me a favor.”
“What is it?”
“Help me overcome my bad habit.”
Yuto face creased. “Excuse me? Helping you with your bad habit. Won’t it be easier if you just go meet the counselor? I’m sure he can help you.”
“So… you refuse to help me? Then I think your secret won’t be a secret anymore after this.”
Knowing his secret is on sake, Yuto didn’t any other choice but agree. “Okay, okay… I will help. So what is your bad habit actually?”
Ryosuke move closer to the latter. “You know, I never get interested in reading a book like what you just did earlier. And I knows, if I continue being like this, my future will be destroyed by myself and I don’t want that to happen.”
“Then why don’t you try one.”
Ryosuke look at Yuto with a disbelieve look onto his face. “But- I can never finish any book. I never manage too even though that I had try.”
“That is because you are reading it without feel about what actually the story in the book try to tell you. How about try to read something and understand what you are reading. I’m sure that will help overcome your problem.”
“And… what kind of book that could help me?”
Yuto sigh and show Ryosuke his book. “Try a novel then or a story book, it have various genre. I think it suite you.”
Ryosuke’s face creased. “But story book is for a kids, I’m not a kids…” He complained.
Yuto shrug; “The choice is in your hand. If you really want to overcome your bad habit… you shouldn’t complaining.”

With that advice, Ryosuke now standing in front of thousands novel and all he has to do now is just pick one and read it. Ryosuke thanked the middle age women for kindly help guiding him there.
Ryosuke looks at all the books around him. It’s so many I wonder what I should read first. Ryosuke walked over to one of the bookshelf and pick up a novel from the shelf. “Let see… it says ‘Ningen Shikkaku’ written by Dazai Osamu. I think I had heard that name before, oh yeah… teacher was talking about him in the Japanese Classic Language class last week. That time I can’t escape because teacher already notice me.”
“Maybe I should try this one, the title sound interesting.” Ryosuke decided to take the book and find a seat so that he can start his reading. As soon as he found the perfect place to read, with full spirit… Ryosuke open the first page and start reading.
I have seen three picture of the man.
The first, a childhood photograph you might call it, shows him about the age of ten, a small boy surrounded by a many great women…
First paragraph still unfinished, Ryosuke already start to yawn but he still want to continue;
(His sister and cousin, no doubt). He stands in brightly cheeked trousers by the edge of a garden pond…
Fifteen minutes passes and at last… Ryosuke surrender. Bukk!! He had fallen asleep making his head to crash with the hard wooden table. The loud sound had taken everyone attention to Ryosuke for a while but when they see Ryosuke lift up his head, they sigh in relive and continue doing whatever they are doing before. Seriously? Did they just thought that I was suddenly death after reading a book?
When Ryosuke is busy stretching his body, his eyes suddenly catch someone figure sitting alone far from the other people in the library and because Ryosuke know that guy identity… he is not ashamed to go there and talk to him.
Ryosuke close his book start walking to where Yuto is sitting. “Hey ‘weird book freak’, can I sit here?” Ryosuke call Yuto as a weird book freak because of two reason; first, he promise to keep Yuto secret and second, he really do think that this guy is weird. Maybe I should call him with N-san, ‘Weird book freak' is kind of harsh.
Yuto turn his gaze toward the person who just speak to him and sigh heavily. “It’s you again… what did you want now?”
Ryosuke pull the seat beside Yuto and sit. He take the book he just read and show it Yuto with a face that says ‘I need an explanation and I want it now’.
Yuto take the book and read the title before he laugh. Do you know how Ryosuke feel when he saw Yuto was laughing at him? He feels like wanted to slap that thick book to Yuto’s faces hundreds of time until people can no longer recognize him. He feels so damn embarrassed now. I know I was worse in reading this book. I’m a beginner okay, you don’t have to laugh at me like that!
“I’m sorry because I laughed at you. Seriously, I didn’t know that you are so serious in this.” Yuto take the book from Ryosuke hand and put it aside. “Okay, since you are so serious… I think I should really help you. But you must remember to keep your promise okay.”
Ryosuke nod his head without saying anything. He still feels hurt with Yuto laughing at him earlier. “Come, follow me.” Yuto stand up from his seat and ask Ryosuke to follow him. Yuto stop in front of a bookshelves. His eyes a scanning all over the shelf until he found the book he is looking for.
Yuto take that book out and give it to Ryosuke. “Here, since you are still not use in reading novel… you can’t just go straight reading a Japanese classic novel. You won’t understand the word and will easily give up.”
“That book you just read was one of the famous classic literature written by Dazai Osamu. The plot is kind of hard to understand and I also not very liked to read that book. But if you still want to read a classic literature, I suggest you read that.”
Ryosuke look at the book Yuto just give him; ‘Run, Melos!’ written by the same author Dazai Osamu. “The protagonist Melos does his best to save his friend's life, Selinuntius.” Yuto said.
Ryosuke turn the book around a read the summary himself;
Melos is a naïve young shepherd with a sense of equity. The land in which he lives is ruled by Dionys, a tyrant king who because of his distrust of people, has killed many people and even his own family members. When Melos hears about the King's deeds one day, he becomes enraged. He decides to assassinate the King, and so he sneaks into the castle with a knife, but is caught and arrested. Melos pleads with the King to postpone his execution and give him three days so that he can attend his younger sister's wedding. The King agrees, but on one condition: that Melos' friend Selinuntius is left as a hostage, and if Melos does not return in three days, he will be executed instead of Melos.
“So, what do you think?”
“It sound great, I will try read this.” Ryosuke take the book and going back to their seat followed by Yuto.
Yuto pack his thing and book. “I need to go now, bye.” Yuto take his bag and ready to leave the library when suddenly he feels Ryosuke’s hand holding his arm stopping him from moving any further.
“Umm… could we meet again? I still has a lot to know and learn.” Ryosuke asked and surprisingly, the latter agree with his idea. “Then I will meet you again at the same place as yesterday, Yamada Ryosuke.”
“Um, we will meet again.”

“Ryo-ryosuke? Are you holding a book?” Daiki exclaimed Shockley, not believing what he just saw.
“Yeah, why are you looking so shock?”
“Are you serious? Oh my, this is a rare… I never seen you holding such a book for a long time.”
Ryosuke chuckles as he heard that. Well, you will always see me holding a book after this. Ryosuke get up from his seat and walk out from his class. “Ryosuke, where are you going?” Daiki asked.
“Secret!” Ryosuke smile to him and continue walking. I’m going to meet with N-san.
In Daiki’s head, he predict that maybe Ryosuke is going to skip the class again since the next class is History. Well, that is usual. Daiki shrugged and going back to his own seat. But then he suddenly got up again with a puzzled plus shock facade in the same time. Skipping up the class with a book?!

Including today, it is already entered two and a half weeks since the incident Yuto laughing at him in the library. With the courage he has and Yuto as his reference, Ryosuke finally finished reading his first ever book in his entire life.
Playback the scene….
That day, Ryosuke was seen unusual. From the beginning of the first period until now only a few minutes before lunch break, Ryosuke seen to be couldn’t focus on what was written on the blackboard. But actually, he just feel overly happy and excited that he finally manage to finish read the book Yuto show at him last week. He feel like wanted to run over to the rooftop and excitedly telling the latter about the good news. But he have to patiently wait for that time. Just a few more minutes... Ryosuke thought as he stare at the clock in front of the class deeply.
And when the bell ringing and the class already over; Ryosuke make his move to the rooftop. He slam the door open making Yuto who was focusing reading his book to jump due to shock. “What the fuck…” He curse looking at Ryosuke who is running nearing him with a beaming face.
“Yatta Yuto-kun!!! I finally finish it…” He shouted.
Yuto chuckles when he heard the news. “Seriously, you take one week to finish a short novel? That really was hilarious.” He said as he continue to laugh at Ryosuke.
“Laugh as much as you want… I don’t care, what the important is that finally I able to read a book with a lot of hard words!”
“Okay… okay; congratulation Ryosuke. So, ready for the next one?”
Ryosuke look at Yuto and giggles… “Looks like you are the one who is over excited now eh.”
“Of course… It’s fun. Like teaching a child how to read an ABC.”
“Tcks!” Ryosuke clicked his tongue as he roll his eyes. “I’m not that bad.”
“Yeah, sorry.”
“I will accept your apologize if you willingly to help me again.” Ryosuke said and the latter nod his head before he smile widely.
“No problem.”

And since then, Ryosuke start to put interest in book under Yuto’s guide. Now the reason he going to the west building rooftop is not only to skip class but also to meet with Yuto. Ryosuke is having a better relationship with Yuto; now they are buddies in secret because Ryosuke still need to keep silent with Yuto secret.
Ryosuke open the door and his eyes quickly search for a certain figure. “Found you.” Ryosuke said when he see Yuto sitting with his back rested at the wall. He seem to be unmoving. Ryosuke thought. “Wait! Unmoving?!” Ryosuke widen his eyes and quickly run to Yuto’s side. He put his finger in front of Yuto nose to sense if there is any air going in and out.
“Looks like he just fall asleep.” Ryosuke sigh in relive. The weather is a little cold so Ryosuke take off his blazer and put it to Yuto’s body. He smile while staring at Yuto sleeping figure. As expected from a handsome student, even his sleeping face look cute. Ryosuke commented. Ryosuke can still remember what Yuto had told him about why he is wearing a glasses and disguises his self as a nerd.
If the person who read the book is a nerd… then no one would bother him right. It is because everyone else think he is boring and unsocial. But that the good thing is. Being a nerd let me read my book in peace. So that is why I wear like this.
“Yeah, Nakajima Yuto… I thanked you for willingly to help me. I think I had started to like book now.” Ryosuke slowly rested his head on Yuto shoulder as he also drifted to sleep.

Did they just thought that I was suddenly death after reading a book?
When Ryosuke is busy stretching his body, his eyes suddenly catch someone figure sitting alone far from the other people in the library and because Ryosuke know that guy identity… he is not ashamed to go there and talk to him.
Ryosuke close his book start walking to where Yuto is sitting. “Hey ‘weird book freak’, can I sit here?” Ryosuke call Yuto as a weird book freak because of two reason; first, he promise to keep Yuto secret and second, he really do think that this guy is weird. Maybe I should call him with N-san, ‘Weird book freak' is kind of harsh.
Yuto turn his gaze toward the person who just speak to him and sigh heavily. “It’s you again… what did you want now?”
Ryosuke pull the seat beside Yuto and sit. He take the book he just read and show it Yuto with a face that says ‘I need an explanation and I want it now’.
Yuto take the book and read the title before he laugh. Do you know how Ryosuke feel when he saw Yuto was laughing at him? He feels like wanted to slap that thick book to Yuto’s faces hundreds of time until people can no longer recognize him. He feels so damn embarrassed now. I know I was worse in reading this book. I’m a beginner okay, you don’t have to laugh at me like that!
“I’m sorry because I laughed at you. Seriously, I didn’t know that you are so serious in this.” Yuto take the book from Ryosuke hand and put it aside. “Okay, since you are so serious… I think I should really help you. But you must remember to keep your promise okay.”
Ryosuke nod his head without saying anything. He still feels hurt with Yuto laughing at him earlier. “Come, follow me.” Yuto stand up from his seat and ask Ryosuke to follow him. Yuto stop in front of a bookshelves. His eyes a scanning all over the shelf until he found the book he is looking for.
Yuto take that book out and give it to Ryosuke. “Here, since you are still not use in reading novel… you can’t just go straight reading a Japanese classic novel. You won’t understand the word and will easily give up.”
“That book you just read was one of the famous classic literature written by Dazai Osamu. The plot is kind of hard to understand and I also not very liked to read that book. But if you still want to read a classic literature, I suggest you read that.”
Ryosuke look at the book Yuto just give him; ‘Run, Melos!’ written by the same author Dazai Osamu. “The protagonist Melos does his best to save his friend's life, Selinuntius.” Yuto said.
Ryosuke turn the book around a read the summary himself;
Melos is a naïve young shepherd with a sense of equity. The land in which he lives is ruled by Dionys, a tyrant king who because of his distrust of people, has killed many people and even his own family members. When Melos hears about the King's deeds one day, he becomes enraged. He decides to assassinate the King, and so he sneaks into the castle with a knife, but is caught and arrested. Melos pleads with the King to postpone his execution and give him three days so that he can attend his younger sister's wedding. The King agrees, but on one condition: that Melos' friend Selinuntius is left as a hostage, and if Melos does not return in three days, he will be executed instead of Melos.
“So, what do you think?”
“It sound great, I will try read this.” Ryosuke take the book and going back to their seat followed by Yuto.
Yuto pack his thing and book. “I need to go now, bye.” Yuto take his bag and ready to leave the library when suddenly he feels Ryosuke’s hand holding his arm stopping him from moving any further.
“Umm… could we meet again? I still has a lot to know and learn.” Ryosuke asked and surprisingly, the latter agree with his idea. “Then I will meet you again at the same place as yesterday, Yamada Ryosuke.”
“Um, we will meet again.”

“Ryo-ryosuke? Are you holding a book?” Daiki exclaimed Shockley, not believing what he just saw.
“Yeah, why are you looking so shock?”
“Are you serious? Oh my, this is a rare… I never seen you holding such a book for a long time.”
Ryosuke chuckles as he heard that. Well, you will always see me holding a book after this. Ryosuke get up from his seat and walk out from his class. “Ryosuke, where are you going?” Daiki asked.
“Secret!” Ryosuke smile to him and continue walking. I’m going to meet with N-san.
In Daiki’s head, he predict that maybe Ryosuke is going to skip the class again since the next class is History. Well, that is usual. Daiki shrugged and going back to his own seat. But then he suddenly got up again with a puzzled plus shock facade in the same time. Skipping up the class with a book?!

Including today, it is already entered two and a half weeks since the incident Yuto laughing at him in the library. With the courage he has and Yuto as his reference, Ryosuke finally finished reading his first ever book in his entire life.
Playback the scene….
That day, Ryosuke was seen unusual. From the beginning of the first period until now only a few minutes before lunch break, Ryosuke seen to be couldn’t focus on what was written on the blackboard. But actually, he just feel overly happy and excited that he finally manage to finish read the book Yuto show at him last week. He feel like wanted to run over to the rooftop and excitedly telling the latter about the good news. But he have to patiently wait for that time. Just a few more minutes... Ryosuke thought as he stare at the clock in front of the class deeply.
And when the bell ringing and the class already over; Ryosuke make his move to the rooftop. He slam the door open making Yuto who was focusing reading his book to jump due to shock. “What the fuck…” He curse looking at Ryosuke who is running nearing him with a beaming face.
“Yatta Yuto-kun!!! I finally finish it…” He shouted.
Yuto chuckles when he heard the news. “Seriously, you take one week to finish a short novel? That really was hilarious.” He said as he continue to laugh at Ryosuke.
“Laugh as much as you want… I don’t care, what the important is that finally I able to read a book with a lot of hard words!”
“Okay… okay; congratulation Ryosuke. So, ready for the next one?”
Ryosuke look at Yuto and giggles… “Looks like you are the one who is over excited now eh.”
“Of course… It’s fun. Like teaching a child how to read an ABC.”
“Tcks!” Ryosuke clicked his tongue as he roll his eyes. “I’m not that bad.”
“Yeah, sorry.”
“I will accept your apologize if you willingly to help me again.” Ryosuke said and the latter nod his head before he smile widely.
“No problem.”
End of playback…
And since then, Ryosuke start to put interest in book under Yuto’s guide. Now the reason he going to the west building rooftop is not only to skip class but also to meet with Yuto. Ryosuke is having a better relationship with Yuto; now they are buddies in secret because Ryosuke still need to keep silent with Yuto secret.
Ryosuke open the door and his eyes quickly search for a certain figure. “Found you.” Ryosuke said when he see Yuto sitting with his back rested at the wall. He seem to be unmoving. Ryosuke thought. “Wait! Unmoving?!” Ryosuke widen his eyes and quickly run to Yuto’s side. He put his finger in front of Yuto nose to sense if there is any air going in and out.
“Looks like he just fall asleep.” Ryosuke sigh in relive. The weather is a little cold so Ryosuke take off his blazer and put it to Yuto’s body. He smile while staring at Yuto sleeping figure. As expected from a handsome student, even his sleeping face look cute. Ryosuke commented. Ryosuke can still remember what Yuto had told him about why he is wearing a glasses and disguises his self as a nerd.
If the person who read the book is a nerd… then no one would bother him right. It is because everyone else think he is boring and unsocial. But that the good thing is. Being a nerd let me read my book in peace. So that is why I wear like this.
“Yeah, Nakajima Yuto… I thanked you for willingly to help me. I think I had started to like book now.” Ryosuke slowly rested his head on Yuto shoulder as he also drifted to sleep.

Extra: What N-san stands for?
Yuto: N-san stand for Nakajima-san since Ryosuke couldn’t call me by my name when I’m wearing my glasses, so he decided that N-san is enough.
Ryosuke: You really thought like that? I choose N-san because N stands for NERD. I never said that that it is Nakajima.

Yuto: So you really think I’m truly a nerd don’t you.
Ryosuke: Well, a little. By the way that is what the title of this story says right.
Silent…
Yuto: Okay, I give up… but the title sure is suck! the Author say it her self.

A/N (2): For your information the two books mentioned in the story are real written by a famous author Dazai Osamu. Ningen Shikkaku in English is No longer human. And the first paragraph of the story that Ryosuke read is taken from the original book. It really is the first paragraph of the novel. For Run, Melos!… the summary was also true… hehe, I decided to use the actually Japanese story book in here.
