MASTERPOST

--

Kurt managed to make it through the rest of the day without breaking down completely. He told his classes that he was only staying until the rest of the week and they were admittedly devastated. Come Glee Club rehearsal, he did shed a few tears and promised them he’d find them the best replacement he could.

That night, he called Rachel who answered excitedly and asked him how it all went. That hurt more than anything, letting her down and saying it didn’t work out. He declined her offer to go over, though, and went to his dad’s instead. Carole answered the door and looked surprised to see him but he said he wanted to talk to his dad in private and she led him to where he was lying down in there room.

“Hey, bud,” his father greeted him, looking surprised to see him when Carole led him in. “What’s up?”

Carole gave Kurt a small nod and smile and closed the door behind her as she quickly left. Kurt took a seat beside his dad and felt tears brim at the surface at his eyes. His dad noticed, his face softening.

“Kurt,” he sighed, “what happened?”

“Dad,” Kurt’s voice broke miserably, “what do you do when you lose someone you never really had?”

--

His dad listened silently as Kurt told him everything that had happened (skimming on a few of the more… delicate details). He told him about Blaine and New York and when he was done, his dad gave him a big hug and told him he’d done the right thing.

“New York is the place for you, Kurt,” Burt told him. “And I’m really proud of you.”

What for? Kurt wanted to sob. Leaving you here? Ruining everything with Blaine?

“And as for the Blaine thing…” Burt pursed his lips and Kurt held his breath, waiting. “They say if you lose something and it was yours, it’s supposed to come back to you, right?”

Kurt chuckled wetly. “I think that’s if you set it free, Dad.”

Burt raised his eyebrows.

“Is there really a difference?”

The next day was his last day and he felt wistful as he walked the halls for the last time. He was surprised at the abundance of farewell presents he received from students and staff alike. Chocolates, flowers, thank you cards… he hadn’t realized they liked him that much.

It only made it that extra bit harder to leave.

At lunch the staff had an honest to god farewell party for him, with cake and everything and he was embraced by almost all of them. Tina started crying, saying she would miss him so much, he was her best friend and Kurt felt more awful than ever as he held her close and promised that they would keep in contact.

At his last Glee Club rehearsal, probably ever, he told his students that he had a farewell present for them. They all watched on intently as he stood before them and sung his heart out, his lyrics speaking more eloquently than he ever could.

(Because I knew you I have been changed for good).

That evening he’d called up all his immediate friends and family to let them know about the move. He’d already spoken to one of his friends who was living in New York and secured a place to stay, and he’d already booked the flight.

It was official now. Blaine or no Blaine, he was going to New York.

Sunday, they’d organized to have a family dinner as goodbye of sorts and Monday he would be leaving.

So come Saturday, he decided to visit one last place before he went. He wasn’t entirely sure why he did. He did have fond memories of the place, but moreover he really didn’t want to spend his Saturday evening alone.

So he went to Scandals.

The music thumped from wall to wall and Kurt found it more than easier to fall into familiar footsteps through the bar, feeling eyes trail after him. It had been a while since he’d been, of course, but the bartender still remembered him as he slipped him his usual in exchange for the notes Kurt slipped across the table. He sipped his drink carefully as his eyes swept through the crowd, feeling slightly disappointed at what he found.

That was, of course, until his eyes settled on a dark figure in the crowd, his small body pressed up against a tall blonde.

Kurt felt nausea roll through him in harsh waves at the sight of him. The blonde was staring down at Blaine hungrily but Blaine couldn’t quite meet his eyes. Kurt felt his fingers start to tremble around his glass as he watched them move to the beat of the music until Blaine’s eyes flickered up almost instinctively and widened unmistakably as they found Kurt.

Without wasting a second, Blaine broke away from the man and turned away, actually sprinting away. Kurt set his glass down and ran after him. No, he didn’t get to run away again.

So this time, Kurt went after him.

“Blaine,” Kurt called after him as they sprinted to the car park. Thankfully, Kurt was faster than Blaine and managed to cut him off before he got to his car.

“K-Kurt,” Blaine warned, his voice trembling, “please, just let me go.”

“No,” Kurt said firmly. “Not again.”

“What do you want?” Blaine asked, voice sounding helpless as he slumped in defeat.

“I want to know why you quit,” Kurt told him. “You can’t just- you cant just leave like that, without telling me? What was I supposed to think, Blaine?”

“I don’t know,” Blaine admitted, “I don’t know.”

“Why did you leave, Blaine?” Kurt asked, ashamed at the tears that threatened.

“Why do you even care?” Blaine shot back. Kurt recoiled at his words and Blaine shuffled back, looking at the ground. Kurt felt hurt stir in his chest and he moved forward touching his arm gently.

“I’m sorry,” he said softly. “The reasons I did for it were wrong and immature and stupid. I freaked out.”

Blaine looked up abruptly. “Why?”

“Because I wanted to stay,” Kurt admitted simply. “And that… that terrifies me, Blaine, because I’ve never… I haven’t felt like that for anybody in a really long time. And I didn’t think you wanted me that way. You left me and you seemed fine about it. And we were coworkers and-“

“Kurt,” Blaine cut him off in a short huff. “When I asked you to stay… I really meant it.”

Kurt gnawed on his bottom lip, turning his thoughts over in his head as he tried to process Blaine’s words. “Then why did you leave?”

Blaine let out a little huff, folding his arms. “Come on, Blaine,” Kurt prodded, “you loved it there. You loved the kids, you love teaching.”

“How was I supposed to stay there?” Blaine asked, eyes wide, full and demanding. “You wanted nothing more to do with me and I couldn’t look you in the eye every day knowing that I’d fucked it up before I even knew you and I wanted you and you didn’t even want anything to do with me.”

“That’s not true,” Kurt whispered. “That’s not true at all, Blaine.”

“I ran away,” Blaine told him. “I hate it, but it’s what I do best. I’m a coward.”

“You’re not a coward,” Kurt insisted.

“I am,” Blaine shot back, a gentle quiver in his voice. “That’s why I left you the first time.”

Oh.

“Well, I wasn’t really leaving you,” Blaine went on. “If I had of known you I definitely would have. But the point was that I left everyone I slept with. It’s always awkward the morning after, you know how it is.” He swallowed thickly, meeting Kurt’s eyes carefully. “I wasn’t ready for a relationship, Kurt. Or rather, I’ve been in so many and fucked them up… you can’t fuck up a one night stand, Kurt.”

Kurt licked his lips nervously, his throat feeling suddenly dry.

“But… you asked me to stay,” he said quietly. “The second time.”

“That’s because it was you,” Blaine explained, eyes wide and open and there was no turning back now. All their cards were out on the table. “And…”

“And?” Kurt prodded, hope swimming high in his chest.

“I don’t want to run away from you anymore,” Blaine finally let out. “I was so sure I fucked things up so I did but…”

“Blaine,” Kurt breathed, taking a step forward into his space. Blaine’s eyes widened, following the gesture as Kurt took his face in his hands. To his surprise, Blaine didn’t pull away, but stayed very, very still. “Stop running.”

And just like that, he closed the distance between them, kissing him softly.

Blaine let out a shuddery exhale as Kurt pulled back, resting their foreheads together. Kurt stroked his cheek with a gentle brush of his thumb and Blaine pressed forward to kiss him again. His lips were warm and pliant against Kurt’s as they moved over his over and over. Kurt felt something warm spread through his chest and it felt so right to just kiss like this, Blaine’s arms wrapping around his neck, pulling him ever so closer.

“Give me a reason to stay,” Blaine breathed against his mouth.

“I quit,” Kurt mumbled through kisses, “I’m going to New York. You don’t have to come but I really want this with you, Blaine, I do.”

It felt so good to be able to say it out loud, after all this time.

Blaine smiled against his lips.

“How good do you think the education industry is in New York?”

Kurt giggled, pulling back to look him in the eye, brushing a stray back curl back from Blaine’s face. He was smiling up at him and under the night sky he was so beautiful, his eyes lit up with stars and hope and affection and yeah, Kurt wasn’t letting him go anytime soon.

“I think it’ll be just fine,” he settled on, pulling Blaine back in for one last kiss before they went (together).
