I don't disagree, but I'm not sure if there's a lot to be gained in this case by calling a lot of attention to it and making people self-conscious. I think as uncomfortable as it is, Obama knows what he's doing; he's been lying about the presence of racism since his campaign for president, going so far as to advise his campaign workers to suppress news of incidents. I think the best cure for this is ambient white discomfort with a non-white president is to treat people as if their stated concerns are real and go on with the business of being a presidential administration. The best cure for fear of the strange is just to make it familiar.
As for health care, while I think some of the vitriol is race-related, good old white boy Clinton also tried at this and failed.
I am not sure of Carter's motive. I doubt it will spark a nice debate. I do think (granted I have little evidence) that a lot of anger is coming from the far right and not the moderate right. The far right has lost and all they seem to do now is spew venom and hate.
Many people have tried to get universal health care going. It seems that folks on both sides (Dems and Reps) shout it down.
Other countries seem to have figured it out like Canada, England, Sweden, etc...
I pretty much can't add anything to that. We are frustrated and paralyzed on this subject in the US. If we could open our eyes and see that essentially everyone else has already done it and are happy, we might be able to relax.
I can't really add to it either. The hate the folks vomit out over this leaves no room for discussion or change. I hope our Prez pushes through and makes it happen.
