What is this community for?
This is the community for a fic and art exchange centered on the Kushiel books by Jacqueline Carey.
What books are included?
All three trilogies are eligible, plus the short story "You and You Alone". When you make your prompts, you can tailor them to any of the novels or trilogies.
What works can be submitted to the exchange?
Both fic (written stories) and art (drawn, painted, digitally illustrated, etc) can be used to fulfill your assignment.
Why is this exchange anonymous?
In keeping with the Midwinter Masque theme, gifts-givers are masked.
What are the requirements for fic and art?
Stories must be 1000 words. Art must be a finished piece of work that is what you feel equivalent to a fic of 1000 words (a short story). For this challenge, we are limiting art to original drawn/painted/digital art (no photomanipulation, icons, fanmixes etc) to keep this round simple.
Both stories and art must include the character(s) that you matched on. You must create a new work: if you have posted the story or art elsewhere, you cannot use it to fulfill the exchange. You cannot use this work to fulfill a personal challenge, bingo, another exchange, etc.
What is the timeline for this exchange?
All times and dates are in EST (Eastern Standard Time), which is GMT -5:00.
Sign-ups open: Wednesday November 6th, 2013, 9am EST.
Sign-ups close: Friday November 15th, 2013, 11:59pm EST.
Assignments go out: November 17-18th, depending on how fast we can match.
Deadline for stories and art posted to AO3: Sunday December 15, 2013, 11:59pm EST.
Stories and art revealed: Friday December 20, 2013, 11:59pm EST.
Artists and authors revealed: Friday December 26, 2013, 11:59 EST.
We will close sign-ups and the collection manually, and we will give notice on this community before we do, just in case.
How does this exchange work?
1) Everyone signs up by filling out what they can make (fic/art), what characters/books verse/genres they can do and can't do, as well as what type of gift they'd like to receive (fic/art) as well as the characters/genres they would like to receive.
2) Everyone provides requests and offers for characters. (Please see the post about signups for more details!)
3) Participants are matched and assignments are sent out.
4) ???
5) Stories/art are posted anonymously. Collection opens on the morning of December 21, Longest Night, with all works anonymous.
6) Commenting madness!
7) Anonymity is lifted a week later.
8) Profit!
Since this is an anonymous exchange, please do not speak publicly about the specifics of your assignment until author reveals have occurred. Afterward, go ahead and post your work wherever you'd like! A post-exchange entry about your story/art would be awesome, too.
What if I have an issue with my prompts or assignee?
Please contact the mods (email: kushielmods@gmail.com) so we can sort it out. Alternatively, you can PM silverflight8 or kmo_lj.
Can I get a beta/cheerleader?

Can I edit my signup?
Yep! You can edit your sign-up anytime during the signup period.
How many characters do I need to request?
You must request at least 3 characters. Matching will be done on an OR basis--this means if you offer Melisande, Imriel, and Bao, you may be matched to someone who only requested Imriel. Similarly, if you requested Melisande, Imriel and Bao, then you may be matched to someone who offered to write Melisande only.

I can't fulfill my assignment. What should I do?
Please default on your assignment. You can do that through AO3:
Go to your assignments page: http://archiveofourown.org/users/YOURUSERNAME/assignments, find the one for "Midwinter Masque 2013", and click "Default".
We understand life happens and sometimes things just don't work out. But please let us know as soon as possible, so we can reassign your recipient.
How can I reach the mods?
The mod email is kushielmods@gmail.com, which will reach both of us. You can also PM either mod through LJ as well: silverflight8 or kmo_lj.
Do we need to nominate characters?
No, there are no nominations--you can choose any characters you like; on AO3, you will be able to select any character from the archive's tag set and put in characters who do not exist yet. However, please keep in mind that the pool of participants is much smaller than a fest like Yuletide. If you are completely unmatchable, we may ask you to add additional characters.
I can't do this fest, I have too many commitments/it's a bad time. Can I participate somehow?
We would be thrilled if you did! You can help by volunteering to cheerlead/beta [ http://kushielexchange.livejournal.com/2895.html], writing treats for other participants or the community as a whole, or just joining in the December 21st madness! We will also have a pinch-hit list, in case you find out you do have time after signups.
