Pinto fic! :)

Jun 14, 2009 21:05

So I was revising and then I wasn't anymore and even though I promised myself I wouldn't finish and post any fics before my exams are over I saw some of the walking shots from today and got inspired. :)

Title: The Unimportance of Routines
Pairing: Zachary Quinto/Chris Pine
Rating: PG-13
Length: 1600
Disclaimer: Some of this is true, but most of it isn't.
Summary: The story behinds a bunch of paparazzi shots or what it takes to change Zach's routine.
Notes: There are images with the text, but they are all pretty small, and I have used artistic license with the timing of events. Thank you lauds  for looking over this and telling me it didn't suck, despite how you feel about RPS...

Zach doesn’t want to change his life: walking Noah every morning and wearing his favorite hat is who he is, his daily routines are an integral part of him; he changes, the paparazzi win.

He is always surrounded by beautiful women, and that too doesn’t change, but his publicist is never happy, she wants less hand holding and more kissing in public. He doesn’t tell her that if Chris was the one holding their hands, everyone would believe he is fucking them, but when Zach does it he is being a sweet gentlemen, a quaint friend. He does point out that apparently he has been dating Rumer and Hayden and Danya and Kristen and Zoe, though he is glad no one really believes that.

It’s no one’s damn business what his sexuality is anyway, he has more important things to do than be someone’s poster boy. If he makes it big time, then it would be another matter, then it would make a difference. As for now, plausible deniability has its perks, fuck Perez, Zach already felt bad enough for not making the rally. It’s not like he is hiding it, anyone who wants to look can easily find out. He made a decision long ago if he’s got someone he wouldn’t hide them, those are his rules. But there is no one.

There is only Chris. They spend so much of their time together, and people are noticing, he can’t put his name into Google (not that he does that unless severely intoxicated) without half the pictures coming up being of both him and Chris.

The thing is, well they do touch a lot and rave about one another, but they are not fucking, Zach knows that for sure, and not for lack of wishing.

He talks to George about it, George tells him he needs to do what feels right.

Unfortunately what feels right for Zach is perfectly unattainable and screwing some girl off a reality show.

It’s his birthday and he has to be on an early flight to Mexico, Chris can’t go and he is sure Zoe is planning a surprise, but it doesn’t make him feel any less abandoned. It’s his birthday damnit, and he wants Chris there.

He starts to shave, and doesn’t quite finish, because what’s the point, the only people that would care are the ones behind the cameras. Zoe takes one look at him and laughs and laughs until he joins her, feeling a little better. Shaving it off is the first thing he does when he gets to the hotel. Still. He feels vindicated when Chris calls.

“Happy birthday man, that was awesome! You’ve got the world talking about your facial hair”

He knows he’s got it bad, but it really hits him when he is having dinner with Zoe one evening and he can’t quite look her in the eyes. She asks of course, Zoe is nothing if not sharp.

He makes an excuse, he is feeling ill, he goes home, how can he tell wonderful, beautiful Zoe that he is jealous because of the way Chris is holding her in a photo shoot. How can he say these words without sounding dangerously insane.

Still, he keeps the remainder of his sanity by clinging to his routines, he needs to do what he has always done, walk Noah and call Chris to bitch about the paparazzi, shop at AA and wear his hat.

He totally has it under control. Until he doesn’t.

“You know, you could talk to him?” Danya offers eventually.

He doesn’t ask her what she is talking about, he hasn’t told her exactly, but it is their first shopping trip in months (and judging by the sight of her, a long overdue one) and he can’t stop himself from talking about Chris “That one time Chris said that”, “Chris would hate this”, Chris, Chris, Chris…Danya isn’t stupid.

Still, he is far too gone to be able to talk about this like a normal person.

“I don’t know what you are talking about,”

She gives him a knowing look but drops it and he could kiss her, damn the paparazzi, the joy it would cause his agent is what stops him.

He is busy filming season four of Heroes and there is less time for his routines, he still walks Noah, he still wears his hat, but who needs to shop at H&M, when you can afford Dior.

He is getting ready to go home after a long day on set when his cast mates - his friends, accost him.

“Is this an intervention?” He laughs.

He looks at their worried faces and feels guilty, he doesn’t think it’s been affecting his work, but maybe he is wrong.

“We are going for a drink, you are coming with us.”

He gets a drink, he gets five. He makes out with a stranger in a crowded dance floor and throws up in a sticky bathroom. He has no time to walk Noah the next morning. He has time to glare on set and wince at loud noises.

“I told you that wasn’t a good idea.” Hayden is talking to Adrian but stops abruptly when he nears. Not that she needs to; he could have told her that, still he makes his own decisions. No one forced him to do anything.

It takes them a week to stop walking on egg shells around him. Zach wants to punch something.

He still tries to follow his routines, but his every move is followed and it’s no longer amusing. The paparazzi are not to be deterred, not even when he doesn’t change his dog-walking outfit for an entire week.

“That’s the price of fame” Joe tells him with a laugh and sympathetic eyes.

He doesn’t call Chris very often, they are living in different cities now, busy filming different things and he is trying to get over his crush as per the advice of everyone he knows.

It doesn’t seem to be working, but he isn’t telling them that.

It is a Saturday afternoon and Zach is still in bed, Kristen keeps calling and he doesn’t answer until his ring tone is replaced with the doorbell.

“I’ve brought you breakfast” She hands him a bag full of his favorite bagels.

“You know I love you, but if you don’t do something about this, I will not be responsible for my actions.”

Zach can only nod, she may be small, but she can be dangerous. She is also right.

It is impossible to do anything when they are living in opposite parts of the country, but Chris comes back for a couple of weeks and they make plans to hang out.

When he sees him, the feeling of relief is physical, it’s like a part of him was missing though all these months and he feels lighter.

They have a good night, sharing funny onset stories and catching up. The topic of their love life is carefully avoided.

They go jogging and everything is just like it used to be.

Chris is back to touching him and standing too close, always too close, but never close enough. Until Zach can’t take it anymore.

The way Chris touches him is not unusual, it is a light friendly touch between his shoulder blades, to guide him through the door and Zach flinches. He moves away from the touch, feeling bereaved at its loss, but unable to handle its presence.

“You’ve got to stop this, I can’t take it anymore.”

Chris looks at him like he’s grown an extra head and walks away.

Zach doesn’t go after him.

They don’t talk for four days.

Zoe tricks them into meeting up, he guesses what she is up to, but goes anyway.

“What is your problem man?” Chris looks hurt and angry and Zach thinks fuck it and tells him.

“My problem is that I love you and every time I see you, my heart breaks into a million pieces, because I know I can’t have you. Because you are fucking some girl off a reality show. And I’ve tried, god knows, I’ve tried to be a good friend and get over this, but I can’t, I am sorry, I don’t think I can do this anymore, not if I want to keep my sanity.”

“What the fuck, man? How can you of all people believe this shit?” Chris is angry and from all the possible reactions that one makes the least sense.

“You never said you didn’t, how was I supposed to know!”

“You never told me you aren’t dating Hayden either, and yet I fail to find her in your bedroom.”

That is different of course, but it hits home, nonetheless.

The anger is gone from both of them. Zach feels exhausted.

Chris looks at him for a long moment, then laughs like a madman and kisses him.

Much, much later Zach asks, “So, this is how it’s gonna be?”

“It is, but you’ve got to lose the damn hat.”

Zach loves his hat, but he is willing to sacrifice it for the greater good. Because sometimes change is better than a routine.

He and Chris are walking Noah together, the hat is gone, their matching aviators the only shield from the camera flashes, not that Zach gives a fuck. He is wearing his favorite rainbow shirt just for kicks and gives them a little left handed wave, his other hand busy gripping Chris’s as they walk down some stairs.
