In a shocking turn of events, this week I liked Gossip Girl and didn't like Glee.
This episode of Gossip Girl was SO fun,
I love any and all Dan/Blair interactions! Like, I don't like Dan very much, but stick him in a room with Blair and he is gold. I love the trade mark GG take downs and the build up this week was great, even if we didn't get the satisfying payoff, which is a shame. But it also shows maturity from Serena. I have to wonder what Juliet's plan was when she went to see Serena, still believing her responsible, because that was really creepy.
I had guessed Ben was Serena's teacher that she had an affair with as soon as Juliet met with Lily, but I did not expect the evil Lily ending at all, I mean she's never been the greatest mother but sending a guy to prison and selling Chuck's company, wow that's taking it a bit far.
I also didn't like Eric's reaction to being told that Serena was set up, same with Rufus' last week, I know they can get sick of all the scheming or something, but considering Serena is in rehab for doing coke, surely finding out that she has done no such thing is pretty relevant, Eric?
I did like the flashbacks, as cheesy as they were, I always enjoy glimpses of ~old Serena~
Considering how awesome pre-prison Ben was, his attempt to ruin Serena's life, which, let us not forget, involved viciously attacking Nate's dad, seems quite a character change. And Serena, honey, you know I love you, but that is in no way an appropriate prison visiting outfit, especially in this context.
In Conclusion: Dan/Blair is imminent, isn't it? :DDD
Glee otoh... there were some nice moments, but as a whole, I am really disappointed.
I guess I should say I am not big on Christmas Songs, but that wasn't my problem, because the songs were fine, more than fine in some cases.
Baby it's Cold Outside I adore, I may have listened to it a million times already, but it's the seconds after it ends that I love most of all and of course Will randomly turning up to ask for shopping advice. That was super contrived, but I don't care, because I like the idea of him taking Kurt shopping for furry tracksuits. I hope Sue kept that one.
Oh and let's not forget Kurt is in love with Blaine, what he believes (but I refuse to) is unrequited, which leaves us plenty of space for fic.
I liked both of Rachel's songs, Last Christmas, as cheesy and overplayed as it is, happens to be my absolute favourite Christmas song and the other one was so so Rachel, plus the awesome navy dress she wore, I have a top version of it, and that made me pretty happy. I even thought this is such a Rachel Berry top, when I bought it.
As for the rest of it. Okay, I hate Artie/Brittany with a passion, I think he is an ass most of the time and I want Brittana back, but my main problem has always been with the way Brittany is written. The crazy things she said work fabulously when kept to one-liners, and I love Brittany and I want her to get actual story lines, but not like this. What is cute as a oneliner, becomes very different when an episode is based on it. Because Brittany believing in Santa or in a magic comb isn't cute or adorable or anything like that, it's the actual behaviour of a small child. If she has the mental capacity of a small child, then she must have severe learning difficulties, and all the sex she is having becomes terrifyingly problematic. Now, I know this is Glee and I shouldn't take is seriously, but there is a line between stereotypical 'dumb blonde' and a serious mental condition and Brittany has crossed that line a while ago. The way I deal with this is by choosing to believe that Brittany is actually magical, and all she says is true, I evn wrote a fic about that, and I will write more, because I need to fix the episode for myself, but it doesn't help my dislike of such storylines.
Saying all that, I did like the whole club coming together, I love it when they do things for each other. Also, the Beiste plot line, she is fast becoming one of my favourite adults on the show. She was wonderful.
Now I am not a Grinch fan, but the song and Sue in green was actually pretty funny and her present for Will was the one thing that made me burst out laughing when I saw it. Hair jokes, there aren't enough of those.
I make no secret of disliking Finn, I think that he is dumb, selfish and insanely self centred and he lacks awareness and I love Rachel, despite her admittedly somewhat similar faults, so this is going to be super biased, but I hate how insecure he makes her feel. Like, she is Jewish and makes no secret of that, just a few episodes ago she made Finn agree to raise any theoretical future children of theirs as Jewish, now here she is putting her faith aside, because Finn loves Christmas. I think they are terrible for each other and I hate that the show is pushing them together. Come on, Rachel kissed Puck, she didn't sleep with him, Finn of course doesn't remember that he kissed Rachel and led her on for ages, while still dating Quinn, nooo he is the perfect saint. Argh, I know Rachel did something wrong, but Finn needs to get off his high horse - he never even admitted that losing his virginity to Santana and telling Rachel he was still a virgin was that a big a deal.
I love Tina/Mike, but literally every single thing out of Tina's mouth this (and most other) episode was an Asian joke and it pisses me off.
But you know what pisses me off most of all? Artie getting robot legs, and that being presented as a Christmas miracle. These mechanical things do not make it any easier for him to move, in fact they are considerably slower than the wheelchair, he admits he can't use them often, but then what is the point? They made it look a little like he is walking, therefore normalising his disability in the eye of his able-bodies friends? Yeah, Glee that was the festive cherry on top. :(
ETA: because I don't want to end my post on a negative note,
here is by far the best part of that episode, and even if you don't watch Glee, you should see this song! :DDD
