For those of you who have cats, how do you clean your litter boxes? Do you only change them every once in a while, and scoop in between, or do you change them completely every week ( Read more... )

We only change them every once in a while and scoop in between. Honestly every since we started trying to get pregnant, the litter box has been Matt's domain (there are some recommendations I am milking, this is one of them) but I never really felt like it took too much time, but agree that it's a hassle. It was always the way we did the litter boxes growing up so it never really occurred to me there was another way. My mom has to scoop everyday to keep up with her 3 but we do it every other day (or admittedly since Drake has his own room where his litter lives, sometimes only twice a week)

Pat hasn't realized that I probably could go back to doing the litter now, and I am not helping him to that realization either haha.

Grace and Lucky's boxes are in the basement, so that's why I only scoop or change once a week. I used to buy a really cheap litter, and you could smell them when you were right by them, but now that I bought FreshStep, they don't smell at all even with only weekly cleanings.

When we had them at the top of the basement steps, my mom or dad would clean them MUCH more often. (This was when I was in high school.)

I have this: http://www.catgenie.com/

Which means, I never ever have to deal with litter. It's fantastic.

We're terrible, we have two boxes and buy scoopable litter, and every week we say "we're going to start scooping this week" and we never do. So instead of buying cheap clay and save money (we dump and change weekly), we keep deluding ourselves.

Our cats litter box gets scooped every night. if there is a particularly offensive pile of poo in there then it will get scooped right away. We don't always add new litter each time it gets scooped, we add more every other morning. We don't get the expensive litter because they dislike it, we get the inexpensive box of Special Kitty litter from Wal Mart (ugh) for about $8.00 and it lasts about a month.

We have three cats that share two litter boxes. The boxes get scooped every other day, and litter is added if it's running low (litter is usually added about once a week). About once every three weeks/month, I wash out the litter boxes with soap, let them dry, and fill them with fresh litter.

Our cats seem to be content with this action plan. If it's been a bit too long since I've washed them out, our cat Kudzu will let us know by spite-pooping right next to the litter box. lol
