Fiction: 1st Time in Diagon Alley
As they entered the Leaky Cauldron that day, they were an odd pair - and that was saying something considering the clientele who came into this establishment. The boy, who was twice his father’s size, stood with his mouth open as his dad led him to the back of the pub toward a place called Diagon Alley. The little boy studied the pattern his father tapped out on the bricks, hungry to learn more about the magical world and entranced by the way the wall parted to give them entrance to the place where dreams began - the place where he would prepare to go to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Stepping across the threshold, Rubeus took in the various shops - Madam Malkin’s Robes for all Occasions, Florean Fortescue’s Ice Cream Parlour, Magical Menagerie - and he didn’t know where to turn. He looked down at his father who smiled lovingly back and asked, “Where to start, my boy?” Rubeus thought for a moment that he would never be able to make a decision, but he smiled and said, “Well, Dad - I need a wand!”
Walking into Ollivander’s brought the older wizard back to a day when, many years ago, he was preparing to enter Hogwarts; and his heart swelled at the thought that his son was following in his footsteps. Ollivander stepped out from behind a shelf and greeted them - at first wondering about this very tall boy standing next to the wizard he recognized from years ago. “Going to Hogwarts then, son?” he asked; and Rubeus beamed back. After catching up a bit with Ollivander, Rubeus and Hagrid walked back out into the sunlit afternoon on Diagon Alley to start shopping for school supplies.
Because of his size, his dad had known that Madam Malkin would have to make his son’s robes special; so to avoid embarrassment for his son, he had sent an owl two weeks before with his measurements. When they walked in, Madam Malkin greeted them like she would any other customer but seeing the size of the boy knew that this must be Rubeus Hagrid. Rubeus beamed when they carried his size in Madam Malkin’s shop and knew that his life at Hogwarts would be unforgettable.
After picking up the books he needed, Hagrid decided to take his son to Fortescue’s Ice Cream Parlour for a special treat. Eating their ice creams, the two talked about Hogwarts and what this new adventure would mean for Rubeus. His father was so happy that his son would be following in his footsteps and going to Hogwarts. It had been hard for him to have friends given his size, but his dad knew that his son had a heart of gold - he just hoped others would see it, too. Then it dawned on him - they had one more thing left to buy.
After they finished their ice cream, the pair of them headed to the magical creatures shop. He told his son that he could pick whatever creature he wanted to have as a pet; and they started to look at the owls, the toads, and the other animals in the shop - but his son was distracted almost immediately. He saw an alleyway, right off of Diagon Alley, where there was the most interesting looking dog; and he ran after him immediately.
Carrying all of the day’s purchases slowed him down, but Hagrid finally caught up with his son and realized that they were on Knockturn Alley - a place he didn’t want his son to visit just yet. While he didn’t think that every person in that area of town was a dark wizard, as many wizards believed, he thought that his son was too trusting and naïve at this point to handle the seduction of this area of town - especially the magical creatures in this area. But he couldn’t stop him - his son had found a magical creatures shop and was determined that he needed to buy an animal from that shop - not the one in Diagon Alley. “These animals need more attention, Dad,” he explained; and his dad couldn’t argue with that.
As they walked into the shop, his father was a little concerned about the types of animals he saw there; and as he looked over, sure enough his son had found a strange-looking spider egg. He knew that there would be no turning back at this point - his son had found a future friend for life.
As they paid and walked out, Rubeus knew that something special was coming for him at Hogwarts and that with the help of his dad and the support of his new friend who he would meet very soon, he could make it.

They woke with a start - seven kids kept even magical parents up until three in the morning on Christmas Eve. Ginny was asleep in her crib, but their boys were stirring downstairs as they searched for the present with their name on it. When they got downstairs, they saw the twins playing with the jokes Arthur had gotten, Percy reading the book he had been begging for, Bill reading the letter from his pen pal - completely disregarding his other gifts, and Charlie polishing his broomstick. Molly started - she saw Ron sitting, forgotten, with no presents in his lap.

As she slammed her bedroom door, Petunia let her fury be known to the entire family.
“Perfect Lily gets to go to Hogwarts,” she thought. “I bet Mom and Dad knew for ages - it was part of their grand scheme to prove that she’s better than me.” But she was interrupted.
“Tuney,” Lily whispered through the door, “Don’t be mad. I’ll write to you every week…”

Today was my first day in office - I cannot believe that I am sitting in my chair in the oval office of the White House, a place where I will be living for the next four (heck, hopefully eight) years and that I am once again blogging about my day. The air was cold in Washington today but thankfully thousands of supporters came to my Inauguration. It must be awful to have low approval ratings going into office, and although things are not ideal, at least people don’t hate me yet.
Since being elected a few months ago, I have been spending a lot of time thinking about my life - I know that this is a huge turning point and that things will never be the same. Ms. President will be a title I will carry with me for the rest of my days; and I can remember a time when the thought of a woman president was laughable. Now, I do not have to break any “glass ceilings” or worry about huge implications of running against a white Protestant man - my how the times have changed.
But I digress, I’ve been thinking about the major influences in my life; and the thing is, I just keep thinking about Harry and Ron, Hermione and Lupin - characters from a series I read so long ago that I thought at this point may be obsolete, me being up in age; however, as I have lived, I have seen the ways that this series has changed not only my life but the world. I mean, when Jo wrote the series, could she have imagined that many American colleges would start to use a housing method that more rigorously places students together based on similar strengths - similar to the Hogwarts model? Could she have imagined that the hatred and destruction seen in the series between Purebloods and mixed races would open up a dialogue in the schools to talk about important issues like race and diversity? Obviously, we can’t pin better race relations on the series entirely, but if it weren’t for her series, I think things would have continued to be slow-moving. With the Harry Potter series being taught at a younger age in schools, these difficult topics were able to be moderated and helped thwart hatred at an early age.
Of course, things are not perfect - in fact, I keep expecting a Minister of Magic to announce himself and walk through my portrait to explain to me the inexplicable things happening in the world with some magical phenomenon we haven’t been privy to - for now, I can only hope.
I see the effects of the Harry Potter universe everywhere I look - from the gleam in my grandchildren’s eyes as they discuss the events at Hogwarts to the listings of “All Harry Potter, All The Time” book clubs that continue to thrive, this series is the stuff of legends. Who knew that Jo’s story of a boy who grew up under the stairs in Little Wiggens would touch so many? As I prepare for the real work of leading the country, I feel that I have a guidebook to follow with the examples of good (and sometimes bad) leadership I saw in Harry Potter. The leadership course I took ten or so years ago focused on leadership styles in Harry Potter - from Fudge to Dumbledore - you can find fault with all of them; but my only hope is that if Rowling were to depict my time in office that it would be fighting for the right and finding happiness in the work that I have done.
I will close for now, but be sure I will be keeping this updated throughout my term(s) - another thing that Jo influenced…maybe I like blogging more because of all of those essays and entries I submitted so long ago to that Harry Potter community…
