I'm due a phone upgrade in a couple of weeks, and I'd pretty much decided that the Sony Ericsson W715 is the phone for me. I was a little concerned since I used to swear by Sony Ericsson's but then made the mistake of buying a W910i. Within twenty minutes of turning it on I'd returned it in favour of the Nokia 6500 Slide. Which I then ended up ( Read more... )

...you know, seeing as you havent even mentioned it. But since I'm totally ok with ignoring your wants in a phone, I've got to ask:

No android love?

I've been up for a new phone for a little bit...and have been holding out for a better selection before making a choice, but I'll admit I've been sweating this number a little:

http://phandroid.com/2009/04/27/surpise-htc-magic-launches-in-spain/. Should be coming to your area soon too, since Vodaphone's got a lock on it in their service areas.

There's also the Samsung I750000000000 :D which has recently been paper launched in Germany.

Again, not in your area, and totally ignoring your base set of desires for a phone...but thoughts? responses? spotted dicks?

Oddly enough, I'm not really in to phones all that much. I don't download applications for them, or write my own. The selection of Android phones in this country is limited, and I don't find it all that appealing to be honest. I think the OS seems pretty decent if you're in to downloading applications and writing your own, but I'm not.

As long as I can check email, browse the Web, send and receive SMS', take pictures and make calls I'm happy. Ideally it'll connect via high speed Internet or a WiFi connection, and be fairly small with a decent battery life. Everything else to me is a bit of a luxury that I'll never use.

The Samsung you've linked to looks good, but also appears to be a touch screen (I couldn't get the HTC link to work so I'm not sure about that one) and I don't get on with touch screen phones. The only thing that's tempting me ever so slightly is to wait until July for the Nokia N97 which looks good, but if the release date slips (which is likely) then I'll miss out.

I hear you about the touch screen phones. I like having a physical, tactile experience to phones...so I'd prefer one with a QWERTY keyboard if I went that way. Unfortunately, neither the HTC one I linked or the Samsung have physical keybaords.

the HTC G1 (aka Dream) does, but it's a bit bulkier than I like. I was king od leaning towards the Magic over the Dream despite the lack of physical keyboard becomes of the form factor and a few small additions they've put in over the G1. We'll see what actually comes out in the states and when though.

Oh, and yes, they all do a lot more than what I use a phone for now (I rarely SMS and dont ever hit the web). So I agree...its all a bit of luxury. But unfortunately, I think this time around the gadget bug seems to have bitten me :D

I'm sure that if I did have an Android based phone I'd probably get some apps and so on. I just don't feel like I'm missing out on much by not having one if you know what I mean.

I do have to admit, mobile Web and email is great since it saves me firing up the laptop to check my email when I'm at home and I can see what's going on in between sets at the gym etc.

I've got an N95 8Gb. Tbh the GPS is not all that shit hot and you have to pay for the navigation thing. Other than that it's a good phone. I believe the N96 is a bit better though.

I think the main problem the N95 GPS is how long it takes to establish a connection, although that has improved with the newer firmware releases. I was fortunate that my contract includes a Nokia Maps navigation subscription for the 18 month term. I rarely use it though, if I need navigation I use the Tom Tom instead.

As far as I'm aware the N96 is virtually identical although it has 16GB of storage and can stream TV.
