So up until today Daya had next year's rooming situation under control. She and one of her fellow nerdlettes were going to set up their own little anime haven. But at the last minute today -- as in twenty minutes before they were to formally sign up for their room -- her sister in costuming and erstwhile roomie got a chance at an off-campus apartment and went with it. This left valiant Daya to sign up for a room by herself then return to her current dorm to watch the residential update on her computerto see which person who could not otherwise get a roommate was assigned to her.
Phone call about an hour ago:
"Dad, This is too weird. I'm going to be rooming with the star forward on the basketball team."
"Wait a minute--"
"Women's basketball team, Dad. I've been
reading her page. She's like 6-foot-whatever and makes like twenty points a game."
"Sounds like you'll be rooming with your brother."
"I know. It is just too weird."
"Anything in her stats about how she feels about costuming like an anime character?"
"She probably doesn't know what anime is."
"Great, Cross-culturalism. By Christmas she'll have you going to the gym working out and you'll have her going to an anime con costumed as an Ewok with a thyroid condition."
"Okay, maybe you're the too weird part."
Actually, Valerie and I are not too worried about Daya and culture shock. Though it is a bit spooky how much this young woman sounds like Daya's older brother, Daya's best friend from sixth through eleventh grades was the powerhouse backbone of their school's cross-country, volleyball, and soccer teams. We think having Emily as a roommate could potentially be a very good thing for Daya. And really, so does Daya.
