I had no idea that condo association dues varied so far and wide. Of the condos Ryan and I are looking at, primarily in Oakland county, dues range from $85-$571 a month. All of course include outside maintenance, some include water, others also throw in heat and or clubhouse/fit. center. But it's absolutely crazy. Who would pay the same (nearly) ( Read more... )

Condo fees typically represent not only the services that they provide to the user, like water, maintenance, and other "optional" features like a club or pool house, but also represent any major work that they have recently done, are doing, or will soon do. For example, if the units need the roofs replaced in the next year, the rates will go up to cover this. In addition, association fees in condos in a building (like a highrise) also take into account the interior maintenance, a doorman, if there, and any common areas. Also, the rates can change from when they're still owned by the builders (when its typically cheaper, to get people to move in) to when they're controlled by the association, and are increased to cover new stuff ( ... )
