I know it's a long shot, but have you tried chiropractic or accupuncture? It sounds to me like you have a pinched (or otherwise obstructed) nerve somewhere between (and including) your spine and shoulder. Spine sounds most likely, but having torn my rotator cuffs, I know the nerves in the shoulder can radiate to individual digits.
The nodule is likely caused by tissue reacting to overstimulation of the nerve.
You can find the nerve paths online (I think Gray's Anatomy - the reference book, not the dumb show- has an online version.) See which ones are most likely to connect to your thumb and you're on the way to figuring it out.
If it is the nerve, then they are right. Amputation would just cripple you and the pain would continue because the problem's not actually in the thumb but further up into the back and shoulders.
Thanks for your comment. :) I was going to go to a chiropractor and mentioned it to my doctor, and she said "No one is touching your neck!!! Do NOT go to a chiropractor!!" I thought her reaction was really strange, but it was so strong I didn't go. Really weird. I would imagine that a chiropractor would know what they were doing so I haven't completely ruled it out. And acupuncture... I haven't tried that either. Something else to consider, thank you. :)
Chirprators and other homeopathic medical practitioners have been locked in a bitter and often heated conflict with practitioners of allopathic medicine (such as most MDs in the US and UK) since the 19th century. It is best not to mention much about your dealings with those on one side of the divide with those on the other until you've sounded out their positions. Some will gladly work with combination therapies with the ultimate goal of a balance approach, but those are still rare. Sounds like your Dr. is firmly in the anti=homeopathy camp.

could it be fibromyalgia? Since you have an actual lump on your thumb I'd guess not...but from what I've heard it is fairly common with those that have M.E... Was just reading this & it got me wondering..sounds like the original poster has found a solution too..

haha, sorry to be one of those people who says "could it be this?/ I know how to fix it!/My grandmother's sisters step-niece's friend's cousin used this!"
It doesn't sound like *just* thumb pain - it sounds horrible :( I see somebody else has suggested accupuncture and I'd agree that might be worth a try. Some people believe that all pains are caused by an energy blockage of some kind and I would personally say that pain causes energy blockages and the blockages then worsens the pain, so any treatment that works to clear energy blockages might help even just a little. I've found Reflexology amazing for my pains - I can feel the block shift sometimes and then the pain goes! Reflexology can be very powerful ..as can Reiki Healing ..and other types of alternative healing/therapies. It's all about finding the one that works for you personally isn't it! I hope you get some relief from it soon *big hugs* xxx
The other thing I meant to say about Reflexology (and possibly Accupuncture, but I don't know much about that) is that certain parts of the feet can be stimulated to produce natural pain-relieving hormones, so can be very helpful for pain relief in general :)
I'm really thinking I should try acupuncture, with so many suggestions of it. :) I will just have to save a bit of money, I'm not sure on how much that kind of stuff costs and I'm pretty broke most of the time. I have heard a little about reflexology, that's when certain parts of the feet relate to certain parts of the body, right? My mum had a book about it. Thanks for your suggestions. :) Am going to post in a minute about my doctor visit.
Yeah, it's insane how much these things can cost isn't it :/ Yep, that's what Reflexology is :) If your Mum's got a book on it, you could always try rubbing your own feet in the right place for the thumb and for pain relief in general :) Glad to see in a more recent entry that upping the medication has helped so much anyway :)
