I remember my first trip to the US in 2012. Having a handful of US coins, and it totalling only about 65c or so... We don't have 1c or 2c pieces in Australia (and back home in NZ, they don't even have 5c pieces!), so with the $1 and $2 coins, a "handful of change" here can quite often be close to $20!
It can add up quickly. I know when I was traveling in the UK (and even in Canada), those $1 and $2 coins (or their equivalent) would accumulate quickly in my pocket.
