Reliving the 1980s in Comics

Recently, I cashed in a lot of Amazon points (and some real cash) and bought the "Marvel Universe - Deluxe Edition" omnibus and the "Who's Who in DC" omnibus. Both are collections of character profiles from each comic book company that came out in the 1980's.

I recently re-read the Alpha Flight series. It really floundered after Byrne left. The Byrne issues though... wow, so classic 80s and classic Byrne. I'm finding myself re-reading the older books more and more lately and really yearning for the simple and fun stories of the 80s and prior.

I have the Alpha Flight trades and they are a lot of fun to re-read. They end with Byrne's run in the 3rd trade and there is a forward that he basically felt he'd ran out of stories to tell with Alpha.

And I am right there with you with revisiting the 80's and before. Before I started re-reading Alpha Flight, I was on an Avengers kick from the late 70's/early 80's and loving it.

At least Byrne's leaving Alpha was planned and somewhat tied up. I thought the crossover/swap with Hulk when he took that over was pretty brilliant. It seems he leaves in a hissy fit of some sort mid-stream on so many of his runs. It's too bad, because I really really enjoy most of his runs and always hated his jarring exits. X-Men wasn't too bad thanks to Claremont, but the books he was writer on, like Fantastic Four, West Coast Avengers, She-Hulk, Superman... all had such bad transition/exits with him.
