Here I go again

Dear Kathryn,
"Congratulations! It is my very great pleasure to tell you that you have been accepted as a member of the Class of 2012 at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California.

"Your acceptance was based on the enthusiastic recommendation of the Admissions Committee, which found that your academic achievements and your extracurricular activities were outstanding. In addition, the interviews you had with faculty and students went extremely well [really?! news to me re: the faculty one], resulting in solid recommendations from all that [sic] met you.

[five paragraphs about what they offer]

"There are, of course [OF COURSE], a few contingencies:"
  • You had better have actually taken all the classes you said you did.
  • And have done well in them.
  • You have to have all five senses, and since it's gonna be tough, we hope you have a sixth as well, or at least the ability to go two weeks without sleep at a time.
  • Sign this contact saying you're all set & you haven't already given your soul to another.
  • Oh, BTW, give us another $100.
  • No, really, give us "$100 within 10 days. If we do not hear from you within that time, this conditional offer will be considered to be withdrawn."
[contact info...]

"Let me leave you with just one last thought: We really want you to come to USC. [Did you just flat-out say that?] We will do all we can to make sure that a decision for USC is one that you will treasure for the rest of your life."

Um. 'Kay. That is, by far, the suck-up-iest letter I've ever seen. Most schools just say 'Congrats, we're pleased to offer you a spot, welcome to our school, let us remind you how hard it was to get in so way to go, we hope you come here, thanks.' USC can't be hurting for students; they have a 6% acceptance rate. Maybe they're low in the rankings in those school comparison guides, though BFA said they had the best PT school in the country. I wouldn't expect them to totally suck at medical education.

Regardless, they might offer more in terms of clinical research and they'll almost definitely have wider range of illnesses and patients with differing socioeconomic statuses, etc. That's just going to be true of Los Angeles. Speaking of, eww. LA, CA. I'll have to go blond. On the other hand, they share the area with other medical schools. So does Temple, but not OHSU. I'll have to make up an extraordinarily detailed spreadsheet, then go with my gut decision.

In other news, I get on the plane to SWITZERLAND at 7am TOMORROW MORNING. Must go pack. Er, rather, do laundry and finish my packing list, then pack.

europe, medapp
