Respect has to be real, not forced. People shouldn't have to earn your repect, they should already be getting it. It should be something they can lose. At the same time, it should be something they should expect and appreciate. It can't be a front. It should be right there, real and honest.

There are different levels and interpretations of repect. You have a different way of respecting your parents than you do for your friends. Also, respect is different for strangers. If the levels you should have for those different people aren't common sense, than a person doesn't even know what respect is.

Trust is a different matter. That is something that should be earned, not immediately given. That would cause problems. There are different levels here as well, but that's a matter of opinion.
