The Pig, The Turtle and The Rabbit

“Maru-sensei! Maru-sensei! Jinjin stole my toy!” a whiny voice came from Kazu, a chubby five year old toddler who was playing at Little Johnny’s preschool playground.

Nakamaru Yuichi, their sensei, immediately rushed to the scene as Kazu’s wails followed. Dressed in designer overalls (of course, his elite parents want him to be fashionable) and a  strawberry printed shirt, little Kamenashi Kazuya was quietly playing with his turtle plushie, when Akanishi Jin, a naughty seven year old, approached the younger one and snatched the toy away.

“There, there Kazu-chan,” Maru-sensei gathered the toddler in his arms. Kazu looked at him with expectant yet demanding eyes as if saying, “YOU! Get my plushie NOW!”

Maru-sensei turned to Jin, who hurriedly hid the turtle plushie on his back and whistled, which he badly failed at.

“Jin-kun, you do know it’s wrong to just get someone’s toy right?” Maru-sensei faintly smiled. He knows how Jin always wanted to be the center of attention, especially when it came to his best friend, Kazu.

“Bad Jinjin! He stole my turtle!” Kazu glared at Jin, who just pouted and hid the toy further.

“Now, Jin-kun, why don’t you tell Kazu-chan that you never meant to steal his toy and you just wanted to play with him?” Maru-sensei spoke calmly and placed the toddler in front of Jin.

“Is that true, Jinjin?” Kazu hesitantly spoke. Jin bit his lip when he saw Kazu’s tearstained cheeks.

“Uhmm...Jin was jealous since Kazu-chan loves the toy more than him,” Jin mumbled and averted his gaze to somewhere else to hide the blush adorning his face.

“Kazu loves Jinjin the most!” the toddler squealed in delight before grabbing Jin’s hand and pulled him towards the sand box.  Jin smiled widely as he let himself be dragged by the younger one. Happy giggles soon filled the air.

Yokatta. Everything’s back to normal now. Nakamaru sighed happily as he watched the two best friends play.

Or so he thought.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The following day, Nakamaru received a call from Mr. Kitagawa, the owner of the school, telling him about the new kid.
Sliding the glass door open, Nakamaru gaped at the sight and resorted to pinching the bridge of his nose to prevent himself from scolding the kid standing in front of him.
Haughtily standing by the doorstep was Ueda Tatsuya, a 5-year-old boy who was obviously fascinated with rabbits that he even thinks he is one. Yes, to the extent that he was wearing a rabbit costume, all fluffy, white and pink, with a toy carrot in his left hand.
“Maru-sensei?” the kid asked, his eyes blinking innocently and his lips curling into a smile.
“Ah. Yes, that’s me. You’re Ueda-kun, am I right?” Maru-sensei answered, a smile now gracing his face.
“Yup, that’s me! I’m Ueda Tatsuya, and I am a rabbit!” Ueda jumped so as to prove his point.
How cute. He thought. “Ne, Mr. Rabbit, let’s go and meet your classmates.” Nakamaru chuckled, holding out his hand which was eagerly taken by Ueda.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Just as what he expected, the kid was welcomed warmly and everyone took a liking to him. Well except for a certain person.

“What’s wrong, Kazu-chan?” Maru-sensei asked, kneeling down beside the toddler who was crouched down in the blocks area.

Kame looked at his sensei for a split second before he continued glaring at Ueda, who was sitting beside Jin. Both were laughing at how Koki brushed off Junno’s attempt to say a joke.

Oh dear. Not again. Nakamaru sighed. “Okay kids, listen up! Who wants to hear a story?” He clapped his hands as a loud chorus of “Me!” came from the class.

Forming a circle, Nakamaru announced that the book was called “The Rabbit and the Turtle.” Looking at the audience, he noticed that not all of the children were listening to him. Kame was still rooted on the spot he left him at awhile ago.

“Once upon a time there was a turtle...” He started, stressing on the word TURTLE, which he knows would catch Kame’s attention. True enough, the toddler’s eyes widened and he squealed in delight before making his way to the circle and pushing Ueda aside so he could sit beside Jin. Ueda didn’t like the action so he pushed Kame back until his body fell, hitting Jin in the process.

“Oi! What was that for?!” Jin screamed, this time, the peaceful atmosphere was ruined.

“Kids, no fighting okay? Shall we continue story time or not?” Nakamaru immediately called their attention, as the rest of the class glared at the three. Jin, Ueda, and Kame sat down quietly.

Nakamaru continued with the story and much to Kame’s delight, the turtle won over the rabbit, while Ueda wasn’t pleased about the ending.

“Sensei! Why didn’t the rabbit win? Why? Why?” Ueda pouted stubbornly. “Rabbits are way better than turtles! Turtles are slow and weak, right Jinjin?” He sharply turned to Jin who immediately nodded, obviously scared of what the other would do if he disagreed.

“Kazu hates Jinjin! Kazu hates Jinjin! Jinjin is so mean to turtles and to Kazu!” Kame shouted before running to the playground.

Nakamaru was stunned with what happened. He had no idea that the new kid was actually that competitive. He can feel another headache coming, so he told the class that they were free to do whatever they want as long as they didn’t cause trouble and didn’t make too much noise.

Little by little, the kids scattered themselves in the classroom. Some were playing house while the others were playing with dolls and robots.

“Uhmm, Maru-sensei, did I do something wrong?” Ueda pulled the hem of Nakamaru’s argyle and glanced at him questioningly.

“I think so, Ueda-kun. Kazu-chan got hurt with your words. He loves turtles you know? Better say sorry to him, ne...” He answered, patting the kid’s head.

“Oh but he said he hates Jinjin, not me,” Ueda spoke, a smirk now gracing his face. “So I think it’s Jinjin who should say sorry,” he added.

“Ueda-kun?”

“Fine, it’s my fault too. I’ll say sorry to him later.”

Ueda left to join Ryo who was trying to be a rock star by banging the yellow plastic guitar.

Nakamaru turned to look at Jin who was still gaping over what had transpired.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Meanwhile on the other hand, Junno, the class clown, approached the crying figure on the swing.
“EH?! Why is Kazu-chan crying?” he frowned. The kid in question didn’t answer, but the sobs lessened.
“Does Jun love Kazu?” Kame mumbled, as he tried to wipe his cheeks with his chubby hand.
“Of course! Jun loves Kazu!” Junno smiled so wide.
“Does Jun love turtles?”
“Un. Jun loves turtles,” Junno giggled which made Kame giggle as well.
“Ne, Kazu-chan, why don’t I tell you a story?” He sat on the other swing, beside the toddler.
“Story?” Kame looked at him.
“Yup!” Junno straightened himself.
“What is it about?” Kame’s right eyebrow rose.
“Uhmm, a turtle, a rabbit and a pig.” Junno mumbled, as he strongly pushed against the ground with his feet to make the swing move.
“There’s a pig?” Kame asked his eyes as wide as saucers.
“You bet. So wanna hear it?” He flashed a peace sign.
“Oh okay,” Kame hesitantly spoke.
“So, once upon a time, there was a turtle who wanted to be the pig’s best friend...” Junno started, swinging his legs.
“HEY! Jinjin’s MY best friend!” Kame protested, a pout forming on his face. Absorbed in his own world, Junno continued.
“One day, the turtle visited the pig and said, “Will you be my best friend?” By this time, Junno was swinging non-stop, totally ignoring his companion, who just held the swing’s chains.
“...the pig replied,” I’m sorry turtle, but rabbit’s my best friend now since you’re so slow!”Junno laughed.
“KAZU IS NOT SLOW AND KAZU WILL PROVE IT TO JUN!” Kame screamed and ran back to the classroom, leaving a shocked Junno behind.
“EH?! What did I do?” He spoke out loud before exerting more force on the swing.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Entering the classroom, Kame spotted Jin making some origami with Maru-sensei. Crumpled papers were scattered on the floor and displeased groans were continuously coming from Jin.

“I can’t do it! I give up!” Jin shouted throwing his turtle origami that looked like a ball, on the floor.

“Patience, Jin-kun. Remember this is for Kazu-chan right?” Maru-sensei said while unfolding the turtle origami in his hands once more.

For me? Kame thought, his face brightening up.  He was about to approach the two when someone grabbed his hand.

“Kazu-chan, am I right?” Ueda smiled while pulling Kame towards the slide.

“Un. What do you need from Kazu, Ueda-kun?” Kame frowned, wriggling his hand away from Ueda’s but failed to do so as the latter held on to it tightly.

“Ne, call me Tat-chan, since I want to be friends with you.” Ueda lifted their hands, their fingers entwined.

“But Tat-chan hates turtles,” Kame pouted.

“Well, I’m sorry about earlier, Kazu-chan. From now on, I love turtles!” He flashed a bright smile.

“Yay! Tat-chan is now Kazu’s friend!” Kame shouted with glee, his eyes twinkling.

“Well, sorry to interrupt the two of you...”

Both kids turned to see their sensei with a wide smile on his face.

“Kazu-chan, Jin-kun has something to give you. Right, Jin-kun?” Maru-sensei pushed the kid towards Kame and Ueda.

“What is it Jinjin?” Kame asked, looking at the blushing 7 year old.

“Uhmmm, for Kazu-chan!” Jin hurriedly shoved a pink turtle origami in Kame’s hands.

“Jinjin made Kazu a turtle? Jinjin loves Kazu?” he spoke, tears forming in his eyes as he noticed Jin’s messy scribbles: JIN <3 KAZU.

“Jin loves turtles but Jin loves Kazu the most!” Jin wiped the tears that were threatening to fall, a smile making its way on his face.

“Kazu loves Jinjin too!” Kame hiccupped.

“And remember, Jin is always Kazu’s best friend.” Jin opened his arms.

“Un! And Kazu is always Jin’s best friend too.” Kame hugged Jin tightly.

Nakamaru and Ueda watched as the two reconciled, happiness and relief reflected on their faces.
