The biotech bubble has long-since burst. Ask anyone trying to get funding for their startup what the environment is like now versus, oh, a decade ago. Nobody wants to front the cost for research and development anymore, and the little guys are vanishing fast. Biotech needs to get back to its feet before it can start to hit again.
Of course, this is just my two cents, but it's based both on my own observations and those of my father, who's been in the business a long time.
already burst? we've not seen a single cash infusion anything close to that of what the dot-com bubble brought forth. yes, it's difficult to get funding, but that's not because biotech is over, it's because it's barely begun. it's still new ground.
once we get some of this genetic stuff to actually be useful, we'll see boatloads of investors pouring their funds in. why wouldn't investors put their cash into something that, say, cures cancer? they would. and they will. just such a product is not yet here. but once it is, i think we'll be seeing money flowing like we never thought possible.
or at least that will happen to whichever nation decides to study this stuff. maybe it won't be the united states, but whichever nation stays at the forefront of this stuff is likely to be the next world superpower.
