Yeah. Right after I read your post. (Before I commented.)
I feel like a bad fan because I'd fallen largely out of the loop. But a lot of that was because my view of Merlin is still stuck in Season 1 (when we had hopes, when we dreamed of happier things).

I'd given up hoping that this time things would work out, that this was an exercise in re-writing myth, rather than just retelling it. But. It still sucked. I don't know. It's just another hollow little pit in my stomach. (I'm catching up on all my finales and everything is just a little bit raw.)

And I definitely agree with you and the poster below, what the fuck was this 3 years of prosperity bullshit. They totally shafted Arthur. They didn't even do him the courtesy of giving him a good 10 years of prosperity and being the greatest King ever. That's shit by all legendary standards. Lenin held the Soviet Union together, and made it work, for longer than Arthur was King. Three years of good leadership and prosperity do not a legendary king make. Come on. *generally pouts and feels ( ... )

Although. I just want a quick aside to say I so totally appreciated everything about Percival this episode. ALL OF IT.

uggggh, pretty much. i really wish they hadn't gone in the arthur-dies direction. idk, i always wanted/expected the trajectory of the show to be the buildup to the reveal and then years of awesome post-reveal (even if the viewer didn't get to see it). since they weren't really consistent to any of the traditional legends for the most part i didn't really see the necessity of closing it the same way. but if they did want to end on that note i expected it to be wayyyy further down the timeline. i guess i don't really understand why they went ahead and killed arthur right then, because as you said, it wasn't exactly like it had been a long and satisfying rule. in that sense it felt like they just knew they had to close the show so this was the way to end it that made the most sense to them, but it didn't make sense to me. :-/

with that said, the whole entire point of this show has been the merlin/arthur dynamic so i can't help but be satisfied with that aspect of it. totally devastating but really well done by the two of them.

Oh gosh yeah, making the M/A plot the meat of the finale was the absolute best thing they could have done, it was the most beautiful love story, regardless you see it as platonic or something more.

I agree that the whole "Arthur will be the greatest king ever blah blah blah" plot that everything have been building up to fell thoroughly, thoroughly through. Stupid writers. I expected him to die, mostly because of all the spoilers around + the legend, but the battle at Camlann? Tragic. Everything was over so damn quickly. The whole Mordred plot fell flat, Morgana's death was so anti-climatic, Gaius didn't die. Gwaine dying I expected, but rather as a badass in battle rather than how they decided to do it. Thank fucking christ that they chose to revolve the last episode around M, A and the reveal, though. If not there is no way I could have forgiven this show.

*hugs*

Also, it's okay; I keep crying at odd intervalls, too.

Will read the fics when I'm emotionally ready.

My phrasing in this comment is so bad, my apologies.
