There IS an excuse, it's just not a very good one.
They teach grammar to non-native speakers. They do not teach grammar to native speakers. Usually people learn english grammar when they learn another language...
also, it's the simple evolution of the english language; as sad as that is. We don't talk like we used to 100 years ago. I wonder if multiculturalism has anything to do with that.
Maybe it's the need to simplify language so that everyone can understand? It would be interesting to see if that has anything to do with it.
Back to the original point, I also hate e-speak short form unless its used in a humourous manner. I don't care who you are, your life is not that important or busy that you can't type an extra two or three letters so I don't have to use a decoder ring to read it.
It takes time to type. Some people couldn't care less for eloquence and will take as many short cuts as they can. As long as the message is carried across that's all the truly matters, right?
But I agree with you. A bad habit is still a habit, and by butchering your day to day speak, you won't be able to produce written gymnastics when it really counts (like essays haha)
I take a carelessness in typing as almost an indirect insult. If the effort to type out a few extra letters is too much to handle, then don't bother chatting, period. That's harsh, but sometimes it DOES come across like that.
