Yesterday was my mom's last day at residential rehab where she spent two months recovering from an emergency life saving surgery. At first, I'd go every day just to ground her in reality, but as time went on, she was up and about, ready to enjoy meals again. You know, there's nothing to stop you from continuing those friendships. Having done my thesis on nursing home residents, I know how much they appreciated people who would come to visit them just to socialize. They loved their families, but the people who were just there to be friends were also treasured. Just a thought.

Every day might be a bit much, but every week might be achievable...

I am not surprised. I grew up in a world where older people (ancients! actually) were a part of every day life and I loved being around them as a kid. The stories and the way so many had prioritized their life to the essentials--willing to talk about life experiences similar to the ones that my parents generation still guarded from childish ears. My mother was as good company in her 90s as she ever was also.
