So, I've got this dictionary project, and when my boss asks if I'd like to proofread a document for $350 and delay delivery on the dictionary by a few days, I say, "Sure!"  She says that it is a rush job, but then waits three days to send me the document, which moves the timeline right across Thanksgiving. Then I learn how to use sticky notes in ( Read more... )

Although I have no idea if they are incompatible, it sounds like they're trying to wiggle out of paying you for your work. NOT good. I hope you saved each of the Emails that were passed between you for the assignment so that you can back up your claims.

Wash your hands and enjoy your Thanksgiving. To Hades with her and her semi-literate plans.

Point well taken. That Nigerian guy is back, drumming up business. I think I narrowly missed being fleeced by him. I've got a call into Elance to warn others.
Actually, there is no way to read Acrobat files in InDesign, even though they are put out by the same company. In the latest twist, I was getting ready to re-edit the books, then I got a new note saying that the file they sent me to edit was the wrong one. They'll get the correct file to me soon. This one is not my fault and I'm glad. If they are screwing up too, we are on an even playing field, and it isn't all my fault. (Not that it was, but I think they think it was.)

At this point I would be requesting 50% payment in advance and a written contract. Just me, but I'd rather be a PITA than spend my time working on something that will never be reimbursed.

I stay far away from anything coming from Nigeria, as I had told you earlier. I've learned from many in my business that the scams from that one nation are legendary and almost always a ruse to separate people from their money.

But...yeah. I'd be asking for money for the time I'd already spent doing their work that they sent the wrong info for. It's not your fault they sent the wrong files. It's theirs. And they owe you for your time.

Thanks for putting it in perspective. I was ready to apologize profusely, not accept any money and drop the project. I'll try sticking to my guns instead. It's the worst project I've ever done, and I've freelanced off and on for over a decade.
