On the way in to work this morning I had to stop to get gas. I was about half way to work when I the low fuel light came on so I started scanning for an exit with a gas station, and I found one in an area where I don't usually stop

That is actually funny. On my way to work I pass several vacant lots that have been taken over by these little critters. Ours apparently are not so smart as everyday I come home, there are I'd say about 5 that don't make it through the day alive DAILY! Our system of getting rid of road kill must be pretty good as daily the little bodies are removed.
I have to admit I find them amusing to watch. In VA, we don't really have them or at least I've never seen them. They aren't afraid of people and they certain will stand up and challenge people who pass by them on the sidewalk. I guess the closest thing I can relate them to is our population of beaver/muskrat. They act very much the same.
Anyway, they are just weird creatures and you're right - ewwwwwwwwww what a mess when they get struck!
