Small spider weave...

Jun 03, 2010 17:53

I've been keeping three Johnson jumping spiders (Phidippus johnsoni) in captivity for about a month and a half. I have two females and a male, which I refer to as Lady Crimson, Lady Gold, and Little Red respectively. While I cleaned their cages today, I remembered that they are Hugely Photogenic.

Normally spiders make me go ick, but my mate reminded me jumping spiders are the "cute ones". They are kinda cute close up... though I'd still likely flee in terror in person lol

Heh, thanks for putting up with my spider blather. They're very VERY small, and move differently from non-jumping spiders, so they don't trip most people's OMG SPIDER reaction in quite the same way.

I like to think of them as a gateway to spider love. First, the jumpers are cute, then the wolf spiders are sort of swift and elegant, then the big weird orb-spinners...

Being small they would freak me out more I think. My spider fear is irrational. The small ones scare me far more then the big ones like orbs or barn spiders.

Oh, so cute! I'd love to know what kind of spiders the ones in my "spider fight" flickr album are if you know....

Which, btw, I was *totally* thinking of you and summer when I was taking the photos.

Heh. I kind of went "no, actually, don't want to spend a couple of hours looking through ten million Generic Brown Florida Spider photos, thx" when I first saw the album, but actually sitting down to look through Bugguide, I pinged right away.

Kukulcania hibernalis, the southern house spider, or southern brown house spider. Yes, one species! They're VERY sexually dimorphic. Here's a male and a female... and they mate in spring, so the odds are good that your "spider fight" was actually a spider romance! (Not that there's a hell of a lot of difference, with spiders.) :>

They were all caught in my backyard in April.

Ah, nice! Michigan's a bit too chilly to sport spiders that large. Biggest jumping spiders we have are about the size of a pencil eraser.

I'll add you back -- I don't think we've interacted personally, but I've known OF you for yonks, and iatro says you're good people. :> I'll probably be posting mostly f-locked from now on -- a psycho ex will have that effect. :P

If you like pictures of spiders, you're in the right place. Check out my " arachnophobia schmarachnophobia" tag for more.

We have had passings by at FC before, but we didn't really talk that much. You were kind enough to allow me to use a bed on one night of FC due to my own dates mix up. I was also the chick that made buttons.

and yeaaah I don't blame you for the F-Lock.
Yes, I shall be digging through those entries :D
