Huh... it looks like what I always referred to as "Wolf Spiders" were, indeed, Agelenids. I had quite a few of these guys living in the basement with me (in Oregon, my bedroom was in the mostly unfinished basement,) growing to very large proportions at times (I guess there was a lot more to eat then I ever realized!) Most stayed a very average size, but some would become quite large. I do not believe I ever received a bite from one (reading on them, it says they are pretty docile,) but hell if they won't run behind you if you're running away. lol Honestly, the poor things were probably as scared as I was. Interestingly enough, I don't think I ever saw one of their webs in the basement. I did see them outside fairly often, though.
I didn't think they were so cute, then... but now I definitely do. :)

Funnel-web weavers are awesome. I've always liked playing with their webs... twiddle a bit at the edge, see if you can get the spider to jump out (which of course necessitates a quick scrounge for some hapless insect, since it's unkind to make the spider waste energy if you don't intend to feed it).
If I have spider nightmares after looking at these pics... it'd be totally worth it, since you manage to capture my interest in 'icky bugs' more than I ever thought possible. Thank you for another entertaining & enlightening installment of SpiderTime with Kyn. :)
(Are you familiar with the German legend about tinsel involving spiders? I was visiting some family this past weekend and saw something that reminded me of it and you at the same time).
I would call that a 'wolf spider,' which is basically what I call all huge creepy fast hairy spiders :-)
I have nasty scorpions here, quite frequently actually. Yay for ARizona desert creepies! I'll try and snap a photo or two for you. Had a large bark scorpion last week in my garage hanging around.
Heh. summer_jackel and I found a forest scorp (Uroctonus mordax) on one of our ridge walks, and I'm not ashamed to admit that I squealed like a ten-year-old given a pony for her birthday.
Wow I had no idea there were scorpion species like this in CA - that's actually pretty interesting. I'm going to take a guess by the large claws that this species sting isn't very potent/harmful

I know a few Christmas spider stories (surprise). I should make a spider ornament for this year's tree, now that I think of it.

I like snakies, except for the one that stole my pants that one time. Still a little mad at him or her.

It was fat and adorable. I petted it. It was unimpressed.
