It's been a banner winter for salamanders. There was one or two under every third piece of bark I overturned.

God, I can't believe that much moss! I miss moss. CO never had that much, but we had a little on north faces in the woods when I was a kid. This 15 year draught has pretty much killed that.

Consequently, I never see salamanders anymore either.

I used to see tiger salamanders in MT... admittedly, only ever after several days of heavy rain drove them out of their burrows.

The scope of reptile and amphibian life down here never fails to amaze me, after spending so much time in the relatively herp-free frozen zones (Welcome to MT, hope you like wood frogs). OMG THERE ARE LIZARDS LIVING UNDER MY PORCH. ACTUAL LIZARDS. EEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

The last time I saw a tiger salamander was some 12ish years ago, when I was working at a horse farm. I went to get a load of wood shavings for the stalls, and out of a shovelful came this little guy. I don't know where the shavings were shipped in from, since that farm had them brought in loose by the truckload, but it must have been an interesting ride! It seemed a bit weird that a water loving critter got stuck in dry wood shavings. I moved him down to a small creek bed in the pastures.

I haven't seen frogs or toads in literally decades though, since I was a small child. Even with a lot of reservoirs, ponds and creeks around here, they're either hidden in very small numbers or not there in the first place.

There is a pond next to the community college here with, like, a million spring peepers. They are nearly audible inside the heavy steel building.

My nickname with my aunt/cousins is "Salamanda" because of my salamander loving ways. :) I miss foresty, wet, green, mossy places!!

What lovely pictures! I've noticed that there's a redwood preserve only about 20 miles from FC. I've thought about nipping out and exploring that one of these days.
