Summary: When a close friendship is tested by unforeseen events, will hidden feelings heal the wounds?
Author's Notes: I had to do a little more research for the fic and ask some opinions from a couple friends and my mom. I think I'm going on a good path. Hope you guys agree.

After taking a short walk outside and checking on the shop by phone occasionally, Aki returned to his mentor’s hospital room and saw Hirashima and a nurse checking the monitors. He sighed softly and tried not to disturb their observation. He moved aside as the nurse made her way out the room and he entered the room further, reclaiming his seat near the bed.

“How is he?” Aki asked curiously, watching the doctor scribble a few notes.

“It seems as though his stats have improved greatly compared to yesterday. Hopefully, he will be reaching consciousness at any moment,” he replied, giving the young man a comforting smile. “Is there anything I can do for you?” he offered.

“No, thank you,” Aki answered, smiling softly and looking at his friend.

“Well, if you need anything, feel free to give the nurse a ring,” the doctor said, before leaving the room.

Aki played with his lipring idly and looked over at Ka-yu’s expressionless face. He glanced around the room, looking over the bland wallpaper with faded baby blue polka dots on an off white background, and examined the machinery next to the bed, watching the heart rate monitor for a couple minutes. He turned his attention back to Ka-yu, wondering what was going on in his mind, if anything at all.

He looked over at the other’s hand, his fingers were slightly bent and his palm partly turned toward his side, and he hesitantly reached over to touch it, maybe even hold on to it if he was brave enough. He paused once he saw a couple fingers twitch and began to pull his hand back. He stared at his hand again, thinking he was seeing things.

The young artist flicked his lipring nervously and reached out again carefully, looking over at his face for any sign of consciousness. He focused back on the hand and lightly touched over Ka-yu’s fingers. He jumped a little at the sound of a groan and quickly pulled his hand away to his lap. He looked over at Ka-yu softly and asked, “Senpai? Are you awake?”

Ka-yu scrunched his face a little and released the tension there, before slowly reaching to rub his head. He groaned softly from the slight pain and mumbled, “Where am I?” He looked over to his left at the blurry figure sitting beside him and asked, “And who are you?”

“Senpai,” the younger man said softly, tears welling up in his eyes, and carefully moved to hug the other. He wiped his eyes quickly settled back down in his seat.

Ka-yu raised a brow for a moment at the gesture and closed his eyes, wincing a bit.

Aki studied his expressions and asked, “Are you alright, senpai? Should I call the nurse?”

“Nurse?” he repeated, finally regaining his vision and seeing Aki a little more clearly.

“Yes. You’re in a hospital,” the young artist informed, “Do you know who I am?” He played with his lipring nervously as he waited for an answer.

Ka-yu looked over the other and answered, “You look familiar. Do we know each other personally?”

“I’m Aki. I’ve been working at your tattoo shop for a few months and you’ve been training me as an artist,” he answered, “Do you remember any of that?”

The older man sat up slowly in the bed, looked the other over again, and shook his head. “I didn’t know you worked at my shop. You must be really good then if you’re working for me,” he laughed lightly. He looked around the hospital room and asked, “How did I end up here?”

“You had a motorcycle accident,” Aki answered softly. He looked at his mentor with concern and asked, “How are you feeling?”

“A little confused…and my head hurts a little,” he answered, examining Aki further, “What did you say your name is again?”

“Aki. Do you know your name, senpai?”

“Of course I do,” he laughed a little, “Matsumoto Kazuyuki. Usually known as Ka-yu to my close friends and customers.”

Aki smiled softly at the quick response, but a little saddened that his mentor didn’t remember him at all. He reached over to buzz the nurse and said, “I’ll ask the nurse if they can do something about your headache.”

It’s no big deal. I’m sure it’ll pass.”

“I don’t want to take any chances.”

The nurse came in and paused at the sight of Ka-yu sitting up in the bed by the doorway. “I’ll get the doctor,” she said, disappearing as quickly as she came. Dr. Hirashima entered the room with the nurse trailing behind him.

“You’re finally awake,” the doctor said with a friendly smile, “Aki-san had been here by your side these past couple days. How are you feeling?”

“Well, my head kinda hurts and it feels like something’s missing,” Ka-yu answered.

“Do you remember your name?”

The patient nodded and answered, “Matsumoto Kazuyuki.”

“Good, good,” the doctor replied, picking up the clipboard, “I’m going to ask you a series of questions, do a quick examination, and then I’ll allow the nurse to bring you some medication for your headache.”

Aki sat there quietly and observed the procedure, noticing that Ka-yu retained a lot of information, but his relationship with him was very unclear. He excused himself from the room and made a phone call to the tattoo shop, updating them on their boss’s condition. He played with his hair idly, hung up, and looked at the doctor walking out the room.

“From the answers your friend gave me, how accurate were they?” the doctor asked.

“They were surprisingly accurate. It just seems like he forgot about me,” he answered, trying not to sound sad.

“I’m sure he’ll remember with time and there’s probably other things he has forgotten,” the doctor tried to comfort him, “I want to do one more examination tomorrow and if his stats continue to improve, you can take him home. But he may need some assistance for a couple days, just in case.”

Aki nodded, thanked the doctor, and returned to the room, noticing the nurse handing over a couple pills to the older man.
