After stopping for a little lunch, Aki directed his mentor to his cozy apartment. He unlocked the door, slipped his shoes off, and guided him to the table.
“You’ve been really quiet today. What’s up?” Ka-yu asked, raising a brow as he settled at the table.
“Just thinking,” he replied softly, taking the food out the bag.
“Must be some serious thinking.”
“Can I be honest with you?” Aki asked, pausing his actions to unwrap the hamburger.
“Of course~” the older man smiled, eating some.
“I have a bad feeling about your old roommate.”
“A bad feeling? Like a demon or something?”
“No, like a dark aura surrounding him. I know I just met him, but my gut’s telling me he’s not a good person,” he said honestly.
“He didn’t seem like a bad guy and I know for a fact that I only surround myself with good people.”
“But you don’t remember him…”
“I don’t remember you either and you’re the most well-mannered person in the world,” Ka-yu pointed out.
“Yeah, but…” the younger man sighed and looked down.
“We can find out together at dinner. He seems like a cool guy.”
“I suppose,” Aki murmured and quietly ate.
Later that day, Ka-yu waited around at the restaurant for the other man and idly flipped through the menu. He sighed softly, peeking over at the entrance, and closed his eyes, trying to remember this Yasu character.
“Sorry I’m late,” a voice interrupted.
Ka-yu opened his eyes to look at his guest as he finished his statement.
“I had to finish a deal. So, where’s your friend?” Yasu asked, snagging a menu.
“Oh, he had to take care of some family business, so maybe next time,” Ka-yu smiled, “I ordered some sake for our table, so get anything you want.”
“Still a big spender,” the man commented, “You were always good with money. I always admired that about you.”
“So, tell me…what are you doing with yourself?” Ka-yu asked curiously, especially since he hardly remembered the other.
“Just the usual. Living the risky life,” he laughed lightly and ordered something once the waitress came around.
Ka-yu followed with his own order and settled in his seat. He smiled at Yasu and asked him about their relationship. He listened tentatively about their wild club outings, unbelievable hook-ups, and their brother-like bond. He nodded a bit and felt more and more comfortable with Yasu the more he talked about their past.
“So, why did you move?” the artist asked.
“Things change and I had an opportunity to earn more money. Speaking of which, I was wondering if I could crash at your place for a couple days. Hotel rooms get really pricey after a while.”
“Sure thing. Anything for an old friend,” Ka-yu smiled.
“Awesome. I’ll pay you for as long as I stay.”
Ka-yu glanced up at the server and smiled a little as their food was placed in front of them. Both men began eating and made small talk between them until their plates were empty. They drunk a couple more cups of sake while Ka-yu paid, then said their goodbyes shortly after.
Once Ka-yu made it home to his apartment, he plopped down on the couch and stretched his limbs out, deciding to lay down for a bit. He closed his eyes and reflected over his evening with Yasu, trying to pull up any memories the other talked about. He gradually felt the familiar presence linger in his throat and travel to his lungs, filling it up with toxic smoke.
He immediately woke up, gasping for air, and put his hand around his throat, rubbing the area. He glanced around the room for the time and saw the illuminating blue numbers read “3:15”. His breathing steadied and he forced himself off the couch to his bedroom.
