Walking into the mansion, my father greets us with, “Back so soon?”
I nod, cringing inside from the touch of the woman’s grabby hands.
“Did you have fun?”
I sigh as Sylvia excitedly answers, “Yes, we did! Shinya-san bought me daisies.” Smiling, she inhales the sweet scent.
Pulling away from her grip, I head toward my room upstairs. She quickly follows me, grabbing my hand. She squeezes it softly while I open the bedroom door. I try to pull my hand away from hers, then I lay on my bed sighing. She stretches out next to me and rests her hand on my chest.
“Shinya-san…?” Sylvia asks sweetly.
“Hmmm…?” I respond, sighing softly.
“Do you love me?”
I close my eyes, groaning a little. Refusing to answer the young woman’s question, I think to myself how annoying she is and how I dislike my father for making me engage with her. It’s just something about I don’t like. She’s always so touchy and constantly asks questions about us as a couple.
She looks up at me while playing with the chain of my necklace, “How can I make you love me, Shinya-san?”
“You can’t make someone love you…and there’s nothing you can do.”
She sighs and softly kisses my lips trying to pull me into her emotions for me. I turn my head away from her, groaning some.
Drifting in thought, I hear my father’s voice faintly. I open my eyes slowly and look over at her. She removes her hand off of me and I stand up to see what my father wanted.
He is standing at the front door of our house, chuckling for some reason with the door open. He turns his head, smiling, and says, “You have a visitor.”
I nod and begin walking toward the door as my father left us alone. Looking at the visitor’s face, I suddenly freeze up.
“Shinya-san,” the guest says, smiling a little at me.
“Asagi…” I respond softly.
“You forgot something.”
I raise my eyebrow and tilt my head slightly.
He pulls out a rose from behind his back and hands it to me. I take the flower, blushing.
“But I didn’t by any roses.”
“I know,” he replies with a little bow, before leaving the door step.
As he walks away, I close the door and turn around smelling the delicate plant. Smiling into the living room, my father asks, “Who was that?”
Not paying attention, I finally realize my father was trying to talk to me. “What?”
“Who was that?”
“Asagi-san. We met at the flower shop earlier,” I answer smiling, still feeling the texture of the petals.
“He’s very nice. So, Shinya, did you have fun with Sylvia?”
Daydreaming a little, I couldn’t focus on my father’s question.
“Shinya!”
Breaking my fantasy, I irritatingly respond, “What!”
“Pay attention, boy! Did you have fun with Sylvia?”
“Honestly, father, I don’t know why you want me to marry her. I’m not even attracted to her. She’s so clingy,” I answer, cringing at the thought of her touching me.
“It’s family tradition. You have to marry someone in the same class.”
“Why? It’s such an old tradition. Can’t I marry anyone I want?”
Father simply shakes his head in disappointment, then continues reading a novel from earlier.
I leave the room humming, still daydreaming about Asagi. It’s really strange, I’ve never liked someone this much and I barely know anything about him. I probably won’t see him again and if I did, he wouldn’t go for a guy like me.
