Substitute Nest
Walking into their quarters, Carson stopped and smiled. John was sitting on the couch, a baby in his arms, telling the baby about Doug Flutie's Hail Mary pass as the baby contently sucked down the contents of a bottle.
"Does Rodney know you're corrupting young Brendan with talk of college football?"
John looked up and grinned at Carson. "Hey, Rodney dropped him off here and begged me to babysit for a few hours before he went insane. I figure he knew I'd be talking sports to the kid."
Carson sat on the couch next to John, reaching out to tickle Brendan's feet. "Have to admit, Rodney is doing better than I thought he would with fatherhood." He looked up to catch John's smirk. "You're going to be teasing him about this until Brendan graduates from his Ph.D program, aren't you?"
"I'm going to be teasing Rodney about this until he gets a restraining order against me in the nursing home," John countered, still grinning. "Come on, all these years that he calls me Captain Kirk, accusing me of sleeping with anything in the Pegasus galaxy version of a skirt, and he's the one who knocks up a native girl? It's just too perfect not to tease him about."
Brendan finished the bottle and Carson took the towel in John's lap and draped it over John's shoulder. John shifted the baby to his shoulder to burp him, and Carson just watched, tickled by the sight of John and the baby.
"Tell me you're not getting nesting ideas," John said, turning to look at Carson through the baby's fine brown hair.
"You have to admit, he is a fine lad," Carson said, running a finger over one chubby arm.
"Yeah," John admitted. "He is."
"But?" Carson asked as the baby belched and spit up some formula. John frowned and cradled the now-sleepy Brendan in his arms. Carson took the dirty towel and rinsed it out in their bathroom, hanging it over the edge of the sink and returning to where John was putting the baby into his portable cradle. Settling onto the bed, Carson waited as John watched Brendan fall asleep before coming over to join Carson.
"If I start a family, I want it to be with you, not with some native Pegasus woman." John rested back against Carson, turning his face to rest his forehead against Carson's neck. "Even though we weren't together, I worried for months that Mara would pop through the gate with a kid she said was mine. I really didn't want kids. I know Rodney didn't when Giriala dropped Brendan off."
"I don't know who was more surprised - Rodney or Radek."
John chuckled. "Good point. They've worked it out though."
Carson tilted his head, rubbing his face against John's hair. "You don't mean they're finally together?"
Nodding, John shifted in Carson's arms. "Radek was hovering behind Rodney when he dropped Brendan off."
Carson chuckled and trailed his fingers up and down John's arm. John's body got heavier against him as he relaxed, and a soft snore told Carson that John had fallen asleep. Carson smiled. He understood what John hadn't managed to say earlier - he, too, would prefer to not have a family if the alternative was impregnating some Pegasus girl in the tried and true method. Artificial insemination specialists were scarce on Atlantis, and neither he nor John wanted to go back to Earth any time soon.
Brendan snuffled in his cradle, and Carson waited, but the baby didn't wake up. Carson smiled and closed his eyes. "I love you, with or without any mini-Sheppards running around Atlantis," he murmured.
John shifted and brought a hand up to twine with Carson's. "Love you too."
