"Vacation"

The pounding on his door woke him up. John rolled out of bed and was at the door before the person could start in on a second round. Major Lorne stood at the door.

"Sorry to wake you, sir, but Dr. Zelenka's gone missing. Dr. Weir did a head count on the sensors, and couldn't find him."

John blinked and nodded. "Assemble everyone in the gate room, full gear. Get McKay there too, he was probably the last person to see him. And Beckett and a few docs in case we need them."

Lorne nodded and ran off. John got dressed and headed for the gear room.

When he got to the gateroom, Weir beckoned him up to the control room. "We have no idea where he went. We do know he can't have left the city, all jumpers are accounted for and we would have known if he used the gate."

John nodded. "So either he's disabled the sensors in the room he's in, or he's in a place where the sensors don't work." John didn't say the third option out loud. "I'll get the teams going. I think Rodney should stay here to monitor."

Elizabeth nodded. "Go."

John dashed back to the gateroom. "Listen up! Dr. Zelenka's missing. We're going in teams of two, everyone's armed, even the civilians," he aimed at Carson's doctors. Carson nodded, and his staff did as well.

Rodney came down the steps to stand behind John. "Last time anyone saw him was last night, when he was heading for his quarters," he told John.

John nodded, thinking. Quickly, he divided up his men and Carson's into teams, then sent them into various piers of the city, making sure there was at least one or two people with the gene in each pier for the portable life signs detectors. John took Carson on his team, and they quickly set out for their assigned pier.

As soon as they were out of earshot of the other teams, and having made sure his radio was not set to voice activated, John grumbled, "I told him if he was planning to do this, to let me know first so I could keep Elizabeth from panicking."

Carson stopped in his tracks. "You know where he is?"

John reached out and pulled Carson along. "I have an idea. So do you, or don't you recognize this hallway?"

Carson glanced around. "Ah," he said. "Right. But he never said anything to me."

John shrugged as he hurried down the corridor, still taking the time to look in rooms, making sure nothing was out of the ordinary. "He mentioned it in the mess hall while on a midnight caffeine run when he and Rodney were working on something. I'd just gotten in from the mainland and needed something to drink before bed."

Carson made a disapproving sound in his throat. John glanced over. "The water from my sink isn't drinkable, you know that."

They came to a stop when the hallway ended abruptly in a wall with a light fixture on it. Carson reached out and placed his hand against the light, at the place where anyone, ATA gene or not, could access the controls. The wall gave a small shudder before it turned on a central axis, letting them enter the shielded room behind it. It closed after they entered.

They went through another, normal door just behind the wall to find Radek sitting on the bed in the windowless room, reading a book. He looked up at them, glancing down to the field gear they wore, and then back up. "Oh dear, I thought I would have had more time than three hours."

"It's been ten, Radek," John said flatly. "And I thought you were going to tell me when you pulled your vacation stunt so I could keep Elizabeth from panicking and having the entire city mustered to find you."

Radek sighed. "I was going to, but then Rodney said something about his trip back to Earth, and," he shrugged. "While being in charge of the city was nice, it would have been nice to have vacation as well, especially since Rodney was not the only one who was drugged to the gills and getting no sleep during the siege. He did not even get concussion," Radek added darkly.

Carson moved over to sit on the bed next to Radek, his arm around the Czech's shoulders as Radek leaned against him. John sat on Radek's other side, rubbing a hand up and down his back. "Listen," he said after a few moments. "When we get back, Carson can tell Elizabeth that you need a break; somewhere where Rodney won't be pestering you every five minutes."

"Why do I have to tell her?" Carson asked.

"In a situation like this, your rank beats mine, Chief Surgeon Beckett."

"This is only place on Atlantis I can escape Rodney," Radek said. "She will not be happy if I just disappear like this again."

Carson and John looked at each other over their lover's head. He was right, on both points. "So we tell her we know where you are, and you need a break for a few days, and we'll be sure to check on you constantly."

"And we won't let Rodney follow us," John added, slipping his hand under Radek's shirt to rest on the warm skin of his back. He could see Carson's fingers gently massaging the back of Radek's skull. Radek sighed and closed his eyes.

John felt Radek relax underneath their hands and fall asleep. He looked over at Carson, sharing a small smile tinged with concern. "You stay here with him, I'll go back to the corridor and let Elizabeth know we found him."

"She'll expect us to bring him back," Carson warned. "Or want to send someone here."

John sighed. "I'll convince her he needs this break. Even if its just a few more hours."

Carson nodded. "Hurry back, though," he said. "He'll want both of us here when he wakes up," Carson said with a grin.

John chuckled. "Wouldn't miss that for anything." He leaned over to kiss Radek's temple, getting a sleepy murmur of appreciation, before standing up to leave. He kissed Carson as well, then left to talk to Elizabeth.

It didn't take long, all though it helped that John could remind her of the times he'd found her and Peter in the jumpers, stealing a moment for themselves when things got bad. She understood why Radek needed time, so John radioed Major Lorne to call off the search and report back to Elizabeth. John then slipped back into the room and removed his gear to slip into bed with Carson and Radek, thinking that Radek wasn't the only one who needed peace and quiet for a while.

Carson needed it, too. And maybe, John admitted, so did he.
