Pam was talking in her xanga about how D contradicts himself... yup! In my piece, I'm supposed to be condescending and in control, yet I'm wavering and still not sure of what I want to say or how to say it. Go figure. What he's doing is experimenting. He wants you to try it one way to see if it works, then he has you try it another to see how that feels. By doing this you might make discoverives about your character, plus it prevents you from falling in the cracks of just going through the motions of your piece. I like to call this exercise, saying no before saying yes. Remember these characters we play are supposed to be very realistic and real people don't always know what they're going to say or how they're going to say it. By him giving you options and telling you to do something completely different, he's giving your character more to think about while they say they're lines. How do the words you're saying land in the person your talking to? It all depends on how they're said. You're right, he does know what he's doing. Even having gone through my first year of college, I still believe he's taught me the most in my career. Don't worry about the frustration, it's part of being an actor. Good luck with your piece though!
