No, quite the opposite. Swords, especially good swords, were far out of the financial reach of most farmers. For a farmer's martial art, look at something like Shorin Ryu Matsumura (which is what the Okinawan farmers used to fight with after the Japanese took all their non-farming-implement weapons away), or some of the empty hand karate (yes, I know that's technically redundant) styles.
Kendo was taught among the priviliged and upper classes, near-exclusively.
Umm ... how much gear do we need? After WtT, I've decided to pick up some protective gloves and a trefoil (foil/épée/sabre) masks.
I went to the link you posted and saw nice sets for around $800. Please tell me I'm looking at the wrong ones ... I live in Silver Spring, well within travelling distance if you are still in Baltimore, and I would *love* to find ppl to spar with in between Thresholds ..
