is kendo basicly a farmer's martial art?

No, quite the opposite. Swords, especially good swords, were far out of the financial reach of most farmers. For a farmer's martial art, look at something like Shorin Ryu Matsumura (which is what the Okinawan farmers used to fight with after the Japanese took all their non-farming-implement weapons away), or some of the empty hand karate (yes, I know that's technically redundant) styles.

Kendo was taught among the priviliged and upper classes, near-exclusively.

This upcoming weekend, perhaps? EC? Swords and chai at Bean Hollow? We can invite others if you want... up to you.

Umm ... how much gear do we need? After WtT, I've decided to pick up some protective gloves and a trefoil (foil/épée/sabre) masks.

I went to the link you posted and saw nice sets for around $800. Please tell me I'm looking at the wrong ones ... I live in Silver Spring, well within travelling distance if you are still in Baltimore, and I would *love* to find ppl to spar with in between Thresholds ..
