It's refreshing to see someone coming up with an informed, well worded answer for once. I just saw someone who wrote "DEATH PENALTY ROCKS!". oh dear. x
It's because of people like that that I don't want to have children. Not because I think they'll be that way but because I don't want to raise a child in this political climate.
I agree that poor people do commit a disproportional amount of crime in comparison to their more affluent counterparts; however, even in case by case links where the facts of the individual cases are not exactly the same but are quite similar the poor/minority client will get the death penalty while the rich/majority client will get life or some lesser sentence. A lot of that disparity happens to fall in the quality of the lawyer and not necessarily on the merits and facts of the case.
i agree with the people saying it's not a deterrent, but then again, it's not called "capital deterrent." i know in my heart that i'm for it, but i believe it should be applied across the board or not at all. (yes, this means people like my father would be death eligible the moment his/her case hit trial.) i agree with what you said about the alarming rate that's applied to po' folk and minorities, however. that's the reason why i think the system needs a complete overhaul. at some point it stops being justice and becomes something... entirely different.
hasn't there been research done where capital case jurors would have gone for LWOP (life without parole) over the death sentence if they would have had that option?
