hmm you have to sign stuff to

they fill out the forms then you get sent something wich you take into the post shop and go this is going to be my car hook me up.
So its not in your name unless youve done that :)

thats the process i went threw when i got my car

Scary.. you'd think there'd be some sort of checks to prevent this sort of thing happening. I have to deal with used-car salesmen at work sometimes, & a lot of them deserve their dodgy stereotype.
This reminds me that I've never seen change-of-ownership papers from when I sold the crumpled remains of my Peugeot... hmmm

there's no change of ownership if it's de-registered
it was insured right? the insurance company probably deregged it as part of writing it off

Well, it was insured, but they didn't pay out. Don't insure your new car with AMI! They may have cheap premiums, but there's fine print in their contracts that reserves them the right to forcefully sodomise you (figuratively speaking).
