The Facade of Niceties

Mar 22, 2010 10:24

Social niceties. I have no tolerance for these in the people I surround myself with and if you aren't just going to tell me how you feel about a certain topic/issue, please don't waste my time. This idea formed while I was thinking why I like the Eric Northman character from the "Sookie Stackhouse" southern vampire book series. As Gwen put it, " ( Read more... )

ok, so you switch places with someone for a week. let's say you do the body swap thing like in Buffy. so you are both aware, you are still you, but you are in one another's bodies and no one else knows. you have a week, you have both agreed that this is cool. Person B says "ok, in this week as you i will go hang out with people, get a tattoo, clean the house and set up recurring alerts on the phone/calendar/whatever to have each day be a task like wednesday will be laundry, tuesday will be bills, monday will be porn time, etc."

who do you want to switch with and what do you want them to do while they are you? for bonus points, what would you do with their life?

For one week, I'd swap with someone who does something meaningful for others. Maybe it's silly, but I feel so busy maintaining my life that it would be nice to spend a week just giving immunizations in third-world countries or building homes for victims of natural disasters. I'd spend the whole week working for the causes that I already support. Maybe teach some illiterate how to read. Working in free theater is good, but it's not enough. Not nearly enough to give to a world that is suffering.

no need for a body swap

Habitat for Humanity has a chapter in Chicago. they do weekend build projects so when the weather is warmer and this show is done you could volunteer there for a weekend and see how it goes

or you could volunteer to help with local animal shelters to help walk dogs or play with kitties or work with helping people adopt

or soup kitchen are always popular

all of these things can be done on weekends when/if you get the time. arrange for the first weekend each month to do something like that

Mohandas Gandhi once said, "be the change you want to see in the world"

I know. I've worked with Chicago Cares before. Doing what I do right now is exhausting. The job to pay the bills, working on improving my experience to get a full-time theater gig, and still get time home alone process the day is completely exhausting. Not only am I dissatisfied with my efforts, I feel that what I'm working towards is not enough. Perhaps Jesus could put others before himself, but I think I have to get my stuff together (so I'm not living in a complete sty) before I can help others. I hate the checklist(s), but I think they are the only course of action to fix everything.
