"You have the longest eyelashes I've ever seen," Penelope murmurs. "It ought to be illegal, Doctor. Good thing they're so light that you have to be close to see them."
Spencer's brow furrows. "How is that a good thing? Long eyelashes are considered attractive on both sexes because they're an indicator of overall health. They protect the eye from debris, and people with short or no eyelashes are much more likely to be suffering from a vitamin deficiency or from something like madarosis. Therefore, people with longer eyelashes are likely to have healthier eyes. It makes sense, then, that people with eyelashes that can be seen from farther away would be more likely to attract potential mates."
Penelope looks at him sideways and shakes her head before bursting into laughter and tapping him on the nose. "That was sort of my point, you adorable idiot. I like keeping you a secret."
"Oh," Spencer says, understanding dawning across his face and tilting his own mouth up into a crooked grin. "Oh! Well. In that case..." He looks askance at Penelope, batting his eyes at her until she presses their foreheads together, calls him an incorrigible flirt, and kisses him square on the mouth.
