I too have seen The Dark Knight... and don't get me wrong, it was sweet. Good performances from the actors involved, good direction, good everything ( Read more... )

Ah hem, I own or have downloaded:

Taxi Driver, Deer Hunter, Clockwork Orange, Apocalypse Now, Close Encounters Of The Third Kind, Chinatown, Alien, Westworld, Tommy, The Shining, Blazing Saddles, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Life of Brian, Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory, The French Connection, F For Fake, The Conversation, Network.

Honestly, I think the figure that the "70s is the best decade for cinema" is pretty overblown myself. And like any film-buff that is worth a damn, I own Citizen Kane.

Citizen Kane is boring as hell. I wouldn't buy it because I would never watch it. It's worth seeing once, that's about it.

It sounds like your post was attacking those who lack the taste to appreciate movies for their historical significance, and you don't own Citizen Kane because it's boring? I think you might need a little more thought put into your rebellion before you can rake others for theirs.

There is a large difference in claims between "something is boring as hell" and "this is the BEST OF ALL TIME". Different type of claims get different reactions. I also tempered my opinion by saying it's worth seeing once.

See, when you claim something is "the best movie of all time", but then don't own a movie older than 1980, what your saying is ludicrous, because the sample size of "movies you have seen" is clearly a very small portion of "movies ever made".

"Most people I own don't own a movie older than 1990, which is weird, since pretty much every great director/producer/screenwriter will tell you that the 70's were cinema's greatest decade."

How is this any different from stating that The Dark Knight is the best movie ever OMGOMGOMG?

It's an opinion, bro. And perhaps you have different taste than the other people you go to school with..? Just a thought.

:) Nothin' but love!

blah blah blah movie-talk blah . . . (I love you)

I'd like to know how many people you own and, if you own them, why do most of them have such sparse movie collections?

It's funny, because when I read the lines "Why does almost everyone I know own the same movie collection with a few variations ( ... )

I think I hear that because I go to school for film. I go to school largely with a bunch of "wannabe" Tarantinos.

I think Christopher Nolan has done a pretty good job, but directing action scenes is still not his strong suit. I think if he continues to do films like this, he should hire a cinematographer with a background in the genre, and listen to him a lot. Also, tell Christian Bale to stop growling when he talks, he overused that "scary batman voice". Those are probably the only real criticisms of the movie I can come up with.

A side note, I think it's funny how history repeats itself. When Ledger was first cast as The Joker, everyone scoffed, but as screenshots were revealed, and then when we finally saw their movie, pretty much everyone ended up with their foot in their mouth. I hope the same thing happens with Joseph Gordon Levitt cast as Cobra Commander.
